Area cross country runners thrive at 3A Regional in Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Several area teams and runners qualified for the Class 3A State Cross Country meet at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence on Saturday, after competing at the Class 3A Reigonal meet at Sugar Hills Golf Club in Goodland on Saturday.
It was a warmer and tough course to run, as Holcomb would qualify both their boys and girls teams, while the Scott City boys and Southwestern Heights girls are headed to state as a team.
Starting with the boys, Holcomb would edge Scott City by four points for the regional title, while Norton was third. Lakin qualified two runners, as they finished first and second, as Alex Luce and Austin Ritsema went first and second. Holcomb’s Brody Deniston finished third, while his teammates Jeb Stoppel and Landen Leonard finished seventh and eighth. Scott City was led by Logan Stoppel, who placed 11th.
On the girls side, Norton held off Southwestern Heights by eight points for the regional title, while Holcomb finished third to take the final qualifying spot for a team. Cimarron’s Janae Fugitt was the regional champion, while Ozia Trujillo from Southwestern Heights placed third, her teammate Layla Kisner was sixth, and Hailey Saucedo was ninth. Holcomb had two in the top 10, as Katrina Macias was seventh and Jenera Ardery placed 10th. The final two individual qualifying spots came from the area, as Scott City’s Belle Trout was 11th and Lakin’s Jordan Ortiz placed 13th.
At Rim Rock Farm on Saturday, Class 3A Girls will run at 10 am and the Class 3A Boys run at 11:45 am.
