Two area players selected for 50th Kansas Shrine Bowl

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On Sunday, the Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors announced the East and West teams for the 2023 Kansas Shrine Bowl, set to be played on Saturday, July 15, at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. It will be the 50th annual shrine bowl.

Two area athletes were selected to play on the West squad. Garden City’s Jerry Artega and Scott City’s Jace Thomas were named to the team on Sunday. 

As for other players from the WAC or GWAC, Hays High’s Bryce Salmans was also named to the West team.

The head coach for the West is Hays High’s Tony Crough, who also played for the West team in 1999 Shrine Bowl game, representing Garden City. 

Assistant coaches for the West team are Manhattan Coach Joe Schartz from Class 6A, Salina Central Coach Mark Sandbo from Class 5A, McPherson Coach Jace Pavlovich from Class 4A, Clay Center Coach Marc Henry from Class 3A, Kingman Coach Tanner Hageman from Class 2A, and Conway Springs Coach Matt Biehler from Class 1A.
