Lady Demons pick up road win, boys fall in slugfest at Guymon

GUYMON–Dodge City’s offense sputtered in the boys game, committing 26 turnovers in a 39-34 loss at Guymon, but the Lady Demons’ raced out to a 9-0 lead and led wire-to-wire, beating the Tigers 49-38 Tuesday.

In the boys game, both teams were sloppy throughout. The two combined for 49 turnovers and more than half of the offensive production in the game was spurred by giveaways.

The third quarter summarized sloppiness best: six total points and 17 turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Demons collectively shot less than 29% from the field and just 4-for-20 from distance. Though Tochi Okra racked up 14 rebounds and Isaiah Taylor registered his third straight in double figures with 10 points, it wasn’t enough to allow the Demons to steal one in a slugfest on the road.

Dodge City trailed for the first three quarters and briefly took the lead with a 6-0 run early in the fourth, but Guymon immediately responded with six straight of their own and never fell behind again.

The Red Demons fall to 3-5 with the loss and return to action Friday when they host Liberal. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.

In the girls game, Becca Unruh continued her hot stretch, scoring 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field. Unlike the Trinity game however, most of her points were either in the paint or from the midrange, as she shot only 1-of-5 from beyond the arc. She now has 40 points in the last two games.

Easha Potts had another stellar performance for the Demons, posting 12 points and eight rebounds, including an improved 4-for-6 from the charity stripe late to thwart a last-gasp effort from the Tigers.

After Dodge City jumped out to a 9-0 lead, they nearly maintained that margin the rest of the first half and went into the break up 22-14. But a 21-12 third quarter–their highest-scoring quarter this season–allowed them to create some significant separation–all the way up to 17 points at one spot in the second half.

The Lady Demons improve to 3-5 with the win and return to action Friday when they host Liberal. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
