Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasenws.com)–Two longtime rivals met up Friday night at the Scott Community Events Center, as the Beavers played host to the Ulysses Tigers in GWAC play. It’s the lone meeting of the year between the two schools, as Scott City would take both games. The Lady Beavers picked up a 53-36 win, while the boys exploded in the fourth quarter to take a 71-55 victory.

Scott City couldn’t have started out any better, as they led 7-0 in the first minute of the game. The Lady Beavers jumped out to an 11-2 lead midway through the first quarter. When it looked like they would coast to a win, Ulysses had different plans. The Lady Tigers closed out the final four minutes of the first quarter, and opened the second quarter with the first three points to lead 13-11. Trailing 15-14, Scott City (7-8, 1-2 GWAC) used a 12-2 run to lead 26-17 with 2:38 left before the break. Ulysses scored the final basket to pull to within 26-19 at recess. The Lady Beavers opened up the second half with the first eight points and had 13 of the first 16 points of the second half to lead 39-22 with less than two minutes remaining in the third frame. Ulysses (1-14, 0-2) wouldn’t get any closer than 17 in the fourth quarter, as Scott City led 51-28 with under two minutes left and picked up a 53-36 victory. The Lady Beavers snapped a four-game losing streak.

Erika Felker led Lady Beavers with 17 points, Brooke Strine had 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Kendall Gentry had a career-high 11 points. Clarissa Sianuqui led Ulysses with 24 points.

With the win, Scott City has won seven straight in the series, the longest since 2002-2004, and lead the series 50-37 since 1980.

The finale of the night would see the Beavers bookend big quarters. Scott City jumped out to a 16-1 lead in the first four minutes of the game, and led 22-5 heading into the second period. It looked as if the Tigers were going to be run out of the gym, but the three point shot got them going in a big way. Ulysses hit seven of their 10 three’s in the second quarter and pulled to within 33-32 at intermission. Scott City (8-8, 2-1 GWAC) led 41-38 with 3:36 let in the third quarter, before a Tiger rally of seven straight gave them a 45-41 lead with 1:03 left in the third quarter. The Beavers scored the final five points of the third stanza to take the lead back at 46-45, a lead they would never relinquish. They parlayed their five straight points to extend the lead to an 11-0 run to get the lead to 52-45 with 6:08 left. Ulysses (2-13, 0-2) was unable to get any closer than five, as Scott City used a 13-2 run over a four-minute stretch to lead 65-49 with 1:31 left. Both teams traded baskets in the final minute, as the Beavers pulled out a 71-55 win.

Jackson Rumford led Scott City with 24 points and tallied 11 rebounds, while Avry Noll had a career-high 17 points and Lawson Bailey added 11. Carsen Walker led Ulysses with 21 points, and Danzel Mendez had 11 points.

With the win, the Beavers have won three straight, and six of their lest seven against Ulysses. Since 1980, Scott City leads the series 60-25.
