Longhorns end season to top seed Colby

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Holcomb Longhorns fell in the semi-finals of sub-state to the Colby Eagles 60-55 Friday night at Lakin Middle School.

Holcomb came out strong and made their first four baskets and would have a lead 9-7 with 4:15 to go in the first quarter. The Longhorns would finish the final three minutes of the first quarter on a scoring drought but still had the lead 11-10. The second quarter was back and forth and Colby would take their first lead of the game 24-23 with 45 seconds left in the second quarter. Holcomb would regain the lead and be up at halftime 25-24. Colby would retake the lead 33-32 with 3:45 left in the third quarter, and The Eagles would then stretch it to a 37-32 lead to end the third quarter, Hunter Vaughn had nine points in the quarter. The Longhorns would fight all the way but could not get enough stops in the fourth quarter and the Eagles would make their free throws. Colby would close out the game and win 60-55 over the Longhorns.

Colby shot 5-18 from three point, 13-34 from inside, and 19-30 from the free throw line. The Eagles had 24 rebounds, 12 of those were offensive boards. They had three turnovers.

Colby was led by Ben Busse with eight points, Shane Puckett with nine points and seven rebounds, and Hunter Vaughn with 26 points, going 12-14 from the free throw line, and grabbed six rebounds.

Holcomb shot 3-10 from three point, 19-32 from inside and 8-12 from the free throw line. The Longhorns had 19 rebounds, four of those were offensive boards. They had nine turnovers.

Holcomb was led by Korbin Johnson with eight points, Drayton Knoll with 12 points, and Brody Deniston with 14 points.

The Holcomb Longhorns finish their season at 12-10.
