Scott City softball sweeps Southwestern Heights

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s doubleheader featured two schools who would be in the same regional in Scott City in the middle of May, as Southwestern Heights would travel to Scott City to face the Lady Beavers Friday afternoon at the Scott Recreation Complex. Scott City would pick up a doubleheader sweep, taking game one 10-0, and the finale 19-9, with both games in five innings. The Lady Mustangs played with eight players the entire day, with the exception of the fifth inning of game two, when they added a player to have nine total.

It took awhile, but the Lady Beavers would eventually pull away from Southwestern Heights. Scott City would score at least one run in each of the first four innings, before pulling away in the fifth and ending the game with a 10-0 victory. Malorie Cupp drove in Hannah Tucker in the bottom of the first to get the scoring started with an RBI Sacrifice Fly. Madison Miller scored in the second on an error and would have an RBI Groundout in the third inning. Crissa Irvin came up with a single in the fourth inning, and capped off the scoring in the fifth with an RBI Infield Single to make the final 10-0. in that fifth inning, Madison Miller would have a two-run double, and Shelby Lisenby had an RBI Double.

Madison Miller had two hits and three RBI in the opener, and Crissa Irvin had two hits and an RBI. Cheyenne Cramer struck out 10 batters without a walk, and surrendered only two hits and three baserunners. Southwestern Heights had four errors, as Roxy Stone and Tanya Garcia each had one hit. Emma Stanfield took the loss, giving up 10 runs, five earned, on eights hits, with three strikeouts.

Scott City picked up from where they left off in game one, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Southwestern Heights responded with three runs in the top of the second to pull to within a run. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Beavers would tack on three more runs to lead 7-4, only to see the Lady Mustangs take advantage of Scott City errors in the fourth inning, as they plated six runs to take a 9-7 lead. However, that lead would be short lived. The Lady Beavers came through big in the bottom of the fourth frame with 11 runs. They too would also take advantage of Southwestern Heights errors, and also had big hits, highlighted by Mackayla Miller’s two-run home run, the first round-tripper for Scott City this year. The Lady Beavers closed the game out on a single from Crissa Irvin in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, that scored Jordynn Kough to make the final 19-9.

Crissa Irvin had four hits and four RBI in game two, while Mackayla Miller had two hits and drove in six runs. Madison Miller had three hits, and Cheyenne Cramer had two hits. Baylee Wolkensdorfer went four innings in the circle to get the win, giving up nine runs, with only two earned. She gave up two hits and struck out two batters, and had just two walks. Cramer struck out the side in the fifth. For Southwestern Heights, Roxy Stone had two hits and two RBI, and had their lone hits for game two. Emma Stanfield took the loss, allowing 19 runs, just four earned, on 14 hits, with a strikeout, but walked five batters.

Scott City is now 9-3 on the year, and will have three straight doubleheaders on the road, beginning with a trip to Goodland on Tuesday. Southwestern Heights drops to 1-13 on the season, and will face Elkhart on the road on Tuesday.
