Scott City baseball sweeps Ellis

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Senior Day on Friday was a good day for the Scott City Beavers, as they played host to the Ellis Railroaders in their home finale. The day would see both teams fight strong north winds and cool temperatures. In the end, the Beavers would be the victors, taking 10-0 and 3-1 wins.

Scott City 10, Ellis 0, Game 1 (6 Inn)
While it took a while for the bats to get going for Scott City, the defense proved to be solid from start to finish. The Beavers would score the first run of the day in the second on a Lawson Bailey RBI groundout, and in the third inning, the Beavers expanded their lead with five runs to take a 6-0 lead. Eloy Ruelas drove in two runs, Aaron Ruelas had an RBI double, and Aaron Armendariz had a sacrifice fly as part of that inning. Scott City added two runs in the fifth, and put the game away in the sixth with two runs to win 10-0.

JP Harris was dominant on the mound. He retired all 18 batters he faced for a perfect game, and had nine strikeouts. Eloy Ruelas, Aaron Armendariz and Lawson Bailey each had two RBI, and Harris and Armendariz each had two hits. Ian McGruire went 3 2/3 innings to take the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits.

Scott City 3, Ellis 1, Game 2
The finale of the day was more of a defensive battle. Ellis would take advantage of two errors in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Scott City answered back on a JP Harris RBI Sacrifice Fly to tie the game at 1. The rest of the scoring took place in the third inning, as the Beavers plated two. RBI hits from Eloy Ruelas and Aaron Ruelas gave Scott City the 3-1 lead, and a 3-1 win. The Railroaders threatened in the second with the bases loaded, but could not get their second run home.

Brady Welker went four innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and had five strikeouts. Lawson Bailey pitched the final three innings, and had three strikeouts, and faced the minimum nine batters. Jarret Mader took the loss for Ellis, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and had eight strikeouts.
