Kansas corn acres same as last year, soybean acres down 6%

Kansas producers planted 5.50 million acres of corn for all purposes, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is unchanged from last year. Of the total acres, 95% were planted with biotechnology varieties, up 1 percentage point from 2022. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 5.10 million acres, up 15% from a year ago.

Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 4.25 million acres, down 16% from last year. Of these,
93% were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed, down 3 percentage point
from 2022. Producers expect to harvest 4.20 million acres, down 13% from a year ago.
Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 3.30 million acres, unchanged from the
previous year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 3.05 million acres, up 13% from last
year.

Oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 26,000 acres, down 19% from last year. Harvested
area is estimated at 24,000 acres, down 14% from a year ago. Non-oil sunflower planted area is
estimated at 12,000 acres, up 20% from the previous year. Harvested area is estimated at
11,000 acres, up 29% from the previous year.

Oats planted, for all purposes is estimated at 135,000 acres, up 23% from last year. Area to be
harvested for grain is estimated at 25,000 acres, unchanged from last year.

Barley producers planted 15,000 acres, unchanged from last year. Area to be harvested for grain
is estimated at 4,000 acres, down 20% from a year ago.

Alfalfa acreage to be harvested for dry hay is estimated at 680,000 acres, up 3% from last year.
Other hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is estimated at 2.00 million acres, up 3% from a year
ago.

Cotton acreage planted is estimated at 170,000 acres, up 3% from last year.

Winter wheat planted in the fall of 2022 totaled 8.10 million acres, up 11% from the previous
year. Harvested area is expected to total 6.50 million acres, down 2% from last year.

Canola acres planted are 3,000, down 67% from last year. Area to be harvested is estimated at
2,500 acres, down 64% from the previous year.
