Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their first matches in over a week, it was a tough Saturday for the Scott City Beavers, who went 0-3 in pool play at the Oakley Invitational Saturday.

Their first match of the morning came against league foe in Goodland. This was the second time the two teams met up. Just like the first match back on the 17th of September, this one went three sets. Scott City look sharp the entire first set, as they never trailed and were tied only once, as they cruised to a 25-19 victory. The Cowgirls gained momentum towards the end of the first set, and never let up. In the second, they would build up a 20-9 lead, only to see the Lady Beavers pull to within 20-15. Goodland closed the set by scoring the final five points to win 25-15. The third set saw Goodland start out with a 14-5 lead. Scott City could only cut it to 14-9, and the Cowgirls would score 11 of the final 12 points to take the third set 25-10.

It would be a quick turnaround for the Lady Beavers, as they faced Quinter. Scott City would find themselves playing catch up the whole match, getting down 15-5, and cut it to two late in the first set at 23-21. The Lady Bulldogs closed out the first set with the final two points to win 25-21. In the second set, the Lady Beavers never had a lead. They trailed 14-4 and played most of the set without veteran Kelly Wycoff, who was suffering from migraine headaches. Quinter went on to sweep Scott City with a 25-16 seccond set victory.

The final match of the day was a battle with Wheatland/Grinnell. Scott City started out trailing 5-0, and the closest they could get would be four points. The Lady Thunderhawks would come out victorious 25-13. In the second set, Wheatland/Grinnell jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and the Lady Beavers responded with five straight. It looked as if Scott City would push the Thunderhawks to possibly a third set, taking a three point lead, but 11 straight scored by Wheatland/Grinnell would be too much to overcome, and fell in their final match of the day 25-14.

In the pool in the Impact Center where Scott City played, Goodland won the pool, while Wheatland/Grinnell finished second. At the high school pool, Oakley won and Colby was the runner-up based on tie-breakers with Lakin. Lakin, the defending tournament champion finished third in that pool and Tribune-Greeley County was fourth. In the semi-finals, Goodland defeated Colby and Oakley knocked off Wheatland/Grinnell. The Cowgirls defeated Oakley in the championship, and Colby took down the Lady Thunderhawks for third place.

Scott City finishes 0-3 on Saturday, and are now 4-12 on the season. They will have three days of competition this week, beginning with a triangular Tuesday at Holcomb with the Lady Longhorns and Southwestern Heights, a quadrangular Thursday at Garden City with Dodge City, the Lady Buffaloes and Ulysses, and then host the Scott City Invitational on Saturday.
