Alitz a gold glover

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-A prolific sophomore season in the field earned former Buster shortstop Tyler Alitz one of the highest honors in Junior-College Baseball.

On Wednesday, Alitz was named a Division-I gold glover by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

“He (Tyler) was a special kid,” Garden City Head Coach Chris Finnegan said. “You’re not going to find a better player or person than Tyler.”

Alitz was tragically killed in a car accident back on May 21 near Concorida, Kan. He was on his way home to Omaha, Neb when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and struck an oncoming vehicle head on. The report says that Alitz was not wearing his seat belt.

During his final campaign in Buster brown, Alitz was sensational. In the field, he recorded 174 putouts (3rd on the list amongst other gold glove recipients), 13 assists and helped turn 16 double plays while committing only 13 errors. At the plate, he hit .304, drove in 38 runs and clubbed a team-best eight homers.

Allitz had recently signed with Moorehead State.
