Cunningham: Legislature Still Hamstringing Schools

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) USD 443 is one of four school districts challenging the school funding system put in place by the legislature. Lawmakers have already tried to remedy block grants which the Kansas Supreme Court found unconstitutional.

Superintendent Alan Cunningham was in the courtroom to hear oral arguments earlier this week and says the legislature’s recent attempt to make things right did not benefit Dodge City schools.

It is expected to be a quick turnaround the court could decide the issue by the end of the month.

While there are some in the legislature who are unhappy the State Supreme Court has jumped in again to tell lawmakers they are not adequately funding schools with the new block grant system, Cunningham says the court has provided direction without stepping on Topeka’s toes.

The hope is the latest case on funding schools will be determined by early June.
