Scott City boys and girls finish second at Ellsworth Regional

Ellsworth, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A drop from Class 4A to Class 3A proved to be a little tougher than some may have anticipated for Scott City. Saturday’s Class 3A Regional meet not only had its challenges with the weather, but the course proved to be tougher than originally thought. The winds were strong from the south, providing a cross wind for the girls race, then shifted during the boys race to the west.

With a competitive field, a pair of nervous boys and girls teams awaited the team results. In the end, both teams from Scott City will return to state at Rim Rock Farm, placing second on Saturday at the Class 3A Regional Meet at the Ellsworth Country Club.

The girls race saw Makaela Stevens lead Scott City with a third place finish. It is the fourth time she has qualified for the state cross country meet. TMP-Marian won the regional with 62 points, followed by Scott City with 71 and Beloit finished in third with 73 points. Lakin just missed qualifying as a team, placing fourth with 84 points, but qualified two runners.

On the boys side, despite the tough day, Jack Thomas for the Beavers was able to win another race with a time of 17:10. Conner LeBeau came in fourth place. Norton just edged Scott City in team points 65 to 68 points, while Southeast of Saline came in third with 96 points. Lakin finished fifth with 135 points, and did not qualify any runners.

The Class 3A  State meet will run on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence. The girls race will be at 11:10 am and the boys will run at 12:55 pm.
