Scott City basketball swept in Hays

Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night’s doubleheader for Scott City at Hays was a game where both Beaver squads would face big challenges against the Class 5A school. It would be a rough night overall, as the Lady Indians picked up a 49-32 win, while the Hays High boys pulled away in the second half for a 70-45 victory.

Scott City lead twice early at 3-0 and 7-5. Hays would go on a big run and never looked back. The Lady Beavers had an 8:37 scoring drought in the first and second quarters that really did them in. Hays High would lead 12-7 after the first period, and outscored the Scott City 15-5 in the second frame to go up 27-12 at the break. To open the second half, the Lady Beavers scored the first six points to get to within 27-18 with 3:37 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Indians would then score the next nine points to build their lead to 36-18 early in the fourth. Scott City could only get to within 12 at 38-26 with 5:26 left, and Hays built their lead to 49-28 late, before picking up the 49-32 win.

Molly Martin led the way for Hays with 18 points, while Carly Lang added 11. Scott City was led by Brooke Strine with 18 points and unofficially had 11 rebounds. The Lady Beavers have dropped four straight.

Hays now leads the series with Scott City 3-1, as this was the first time that the teams met up in Hays. The first two were in Colby at the Orange & Black Tournament, and last year was in Scott City.

Hays Boys 70, Scott City 45
For the first quarter, the game felt similar to last years game in Scott City, where the Beavers came out with hot shooting and built an early lead. Scott City led for a majority of the opening eight minutes, building leads of six and five on a pair of occasions, before taking an 18-15 lead into the second quarter. Hays would take the game over and in a big way over the next two periods. The Indians forced the Beavers into 16 turnovers over the next 16 minutes, eight in each quarter, and outscored Scott City 35-12 over that span. Hays led 29-23 at the break, and had runs of 9-1 and 12 straight in the third quarter to take a 50-30 lead into the final quarter. The Beavers went 10:02 without a field goal, from late in the first half to the first minute of the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the No. 3 ranked team in Class 5A led by as many as 27, before picking up a 70-45 win. 

Hays was led by Jace Linenberger’s 21 points, as 10 players scored for the Indians. Gus Hawkins had 13 to lead Scott City, while Austin Thon finished with 11, as the Beavers saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

After Tuesday, the all-time series is tied at four games apiece, as Hays has won the last three games. The last two games in the series have been non-neutral games.

Scott City will return to GWAC play on Friday as they play at Ulysses, while Hays hits the road for the first of two matchups against Dodge City on Friday in WAC play.
