Lady Beaver softball takes two from Ulysses

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With a new season comes a new set of players to the varsity team. Tuesday’s season opener with Scott City and Ulysses saw both teams see a lineup of many new players to the varsity. The Lady Beavers would prevail in both games, as they swept the GWAC opener with a 6-0 and 17-4 doubleheader sweep.

It took awhile for the offense for Scott City to get going, but they did enough in their season opener. Following a scoreless inning, the Lady Beavers would take advantage of three Lady Tiger errors in the second to take a 2-0 lead. They added runs in the third and fourth, and added two more in the fifth to cap off the scoring. Scott City didn’t allow a baserunner until the top of the sixth with one out, and Ulysses didn’t get a hit until the top of the seventh. 

Cheyenne Cramer had 16 strikeouts and allowed one walk in seven innings of work in the circle for Scott City and got the win. Mackayla Miller, Cramer and Shelby Lisenby each had a hit and an RBI for the Lady Beavers. Addi Harbour took the loss for Ulysses, as she allowed six runs, four earned, on three hits, with seven strikeouts and six walks.

Ulysses struck first in the top of the first inning, as both teams used different pitchers from game one. The Lady Tigers took advantage of some early walks and led 2-0 before Scott City came to bat. In the bottom of the first, the Lady Beavers had 17 plate appearances, and took advantage of several errors, and scored 12 runs to lead 12-2. Ulysses added two runs in the second, while the Lady Beavers had two in the third and four runs in the fourth to make the final 17-4. 

Baylee Wolkensdorfer went five innings in the circle, and gave up four runs on three hits with three strikeouts and five walks. She ended up facing the minimum batters in the final three innings. Madison Miller and Jesarella Navarrette head drove in four runs, and Cheyenne Cramer had three RBI. Jeymi Rosales had two RBI for the Lady Tigers in the loss. Daisy Ballesteros gave up six earned runs on 11 hits in four innings of work.

Scott City has a week off before they host Holcomb on Tuesday, April 4, while Ulysses will face Lakin on Thursday.
