Passing game leads Scott City to big win over Wray
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Over the years, Scott City has been know for their ground game. Through two games, the Beavers may have added an air raid. In Friday’s home opener against Wray, the Beavers would throw for 269 yards and five touchdowns in a 54-22 win over the Eagles at Darner Field on Military Appreciation Night. It was the first varsity game on the brand new field turf installed over the summer.
Following one first down and a punt for Wray, the Beavers struck first in just three plays. On third down, Camden Vulgamore connected with Collin McDaniel on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 8:28 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Meza booted in the PAT to make it 7-0. Following an Eagle three-and-out, the Beavers would take over, and two plays into the drive, it was a 68-yard pass play from Vulgamore to McDaniel, and Scott City led 14-0, midway through the first quarter with the Dayanara Castillo extra point.
Both teams scored 14 points in the second period. The Beavers scored on a drive that lasted 4:23. Vulgamore would throw his third scoring pass of the half with 11:23 remaining in the second quarter, connecting with Jackson Rumford from 10 yards out. Meza kicked in the extra point. Wray scored on the ensuing drive on an eight-play drive, as Casey Midcap scored from six yards out with 7:38 left before the half. Aaron Tena ran in the two-point conversion to pull the Eagles to within 21-8. Scott City was forced to punt, but Wray would muff the punt, and the Beavers took over at the Eagle 43. It took Scott City just 67 seconds to score, as it was the second scoring connection of the quarter from Vulgamore to Rumford, this time from 32 yards out. The Castillo kick put the Beavers up 28-8 with 4:35 left before the break. Wray put together an impressive drive, covering 83 yards. With 1:27 left before halftime, Midcap scored on a delayed quarterback draw from five yards out on fourth and goal to get to within 28-14. The two-point conversion failed.
Scott City drove down the field late in the first half, but an interception ended the threat. Wray would take it to their own 40 to close out the first half.
To open the second half, the Beavers made a statement drive. A 6-play, 63-yard drive was capped off by a seven-yard pass play to Tracer Chapman from Camden Vulgamore with 9:51 left in the third frame to extend the lead to 35-14. Scott City would intercept the Eagles at the Wray 43 on the next drive. After five touchdown passes, the Beavers had their first rushing touchdown, as Collin McDaniel scored from seven yards out with 4:14 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-14 with the Castillo PAT. The Beavers added to their lead in the third quarter on an Avry Noll one-yard run with 2:08 left in the period to push the lead to 48-14. They would miss the extra point.
Both teams scored one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Wray got on the board with seven minutes left on a Midcap one-yard run. Samuel Meisner ran in the two-point conversion to make it 48-22. With both teams putting the second team in, Scott City capped the scoring off with a five-yard run by Cayden Couchman with 4:22 left, as they missed the two-point conversion. That was set up by a 28-yard pass play from Peyton Bergner to Brodie Holstein.
Camden Vulgamore was 10-13 passing for 236 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He connected with six different receivers. Collin McDaniel had three receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown rush. The Beavers were balanced offensively, as they piled up 483 yards, with 268 through the air.
Wray finished with 252 yards of offense, with 144 coming through the air. Casey Midcap threw for all the yards on 12-22 passing with an interception. He also was the leading rusher, scoring three touchdowns, and rushed for 78 yards. The Eagles were led by Ben Harms in the receiving department, hauling in seven passes for 72 yards.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 10-1 all time against teams from Colorado, including a 3-1 advantage in the series with Wray. It was the first time the Eagles visited Scott City since 1995. The 54 points were the most since putting up 57 at home against Goodland October 14, 2022. In their first two games, the Beavers have put up 103 points, which is the first time they have averaged over 50 points over their first two games since 1991, when they put up 60 points against Colby and 66 against St. Francis to open the season. Jim Turner has tied Bill Arnold for the third most wins by a coach in program history. Both have 56 wins.
Scott City is 2-0 for the third straight season and for the sixth time in eight years. They will host Millwood from Oklahoma City on Friday for homecoming. The Falcons are 0-1, and will play on Saturday afternoon. Wray is 2-1, and will host Ellicott in their final non-district game next Friday.
