Scott City tennis 3rd at Phillipsburg, volleyball sweeps home triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City girls tennis team was in action on Tuesday, as they competed at the Phillipsburg Invitational, where they came up with a third place finish. Volleyball returned home on Thursday with a triangular of old nearby rivals in Dighton and Wichita County. Scott City would come up with the triangular sweep, winning both matches in straight sets.

In Phillipsburg, it was a tough day against quality opponents, the Lady Beavers would finish in third place with 18 points, behind Phillipsburg’s 37 points and Ellsworth’s 33 points. Malorie Cupp at No. 1 Singles, Madison Roberts/Tatum Wells in No. 1 Doubles, as well as the No. 2 Doubles team of Tayler Koehn/Erin Massaglia placed third overall. At No. 2 Singels, Kennedy Wasinger finished in fourth place. Scott City will begin a busy stretch of their season, as they head to the Hays High Invitational on Saturday, and host the Scott City Invitational on Monday.

The Lady Beaver volleyball team picked up their first triangular sweep of the season on Thursday, as they downed Wichita County 25-23, 25-15. In their first set, the Lady Indians led 15-8 midway through, ebeofre Scott City was able to use a 15-4 run to lead 23-19. However, Wichita County ran five straight to tie the set at 23, before the Lady Beavers scored the final two points to win 25-23. It was back and forth early on in the second set. The Lady Indians led 7-6, before Scott City was able to get eight of the next 11 points to go up 14-10. Wichita County cut it to within 14-12, and Scott City put the hammer down, ending the set and match on an 11-3 win to win 25-15. Dayanara Castillo had five service aces and three kills, while Kinleigh Wren had three kills and Crissa Irvin and Avery Lewis had three aces. Scott City had 14 service ases. 

Against Dighton, Scott City never trailed, as they cruised to a 25-11, 25-16 win over the Lady Hornets in their first meeting in nearly a decade. The Lady Beavers jumped out to an 8-2 lead, and 16-5 in the opening set, and closed with the final four points in the win. They would pick up from where the left off in the second set, jumping out 7-1, and led 19-9, before taking a 25-16 set two victory. Dayanara Castillo had five kills, while Megan Trout and Avery Lewis each had three kils, and Erika Felker had three of Scott Cit’s eight service aces in the win. Dighton rallied from a 22-15 deficit in the third set to defeat Wichita County 8-25, 25-20, 26-24 in the other match. 

The Lady Beavers are now 7-6 and will be at Garden City for a dual on Tuesday and at Cimarron for their first GWAC triangular with Cimarron and Holcomb on Thursday.
