Beavers shut out in defensive battle
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Friday night’s game at Darner Field, both Scott City and Millwood entered scoring over 50 points per contest in their first two games. What may have to believed to be an offensive shootout turned out to be a defensive battle. A third quarter score would prove to be the difference, as the Falcons of Millwood would take advantage of a third quarter turnover and short field, and withstand two red zone drives by the Beavers, to win 6-0, spoiling Scott City’s homecoming.
The first quarter saw both teams go three-and-out on their opening drive. Scott City would put together a nearly five-minute drive on their second possession that saw them overcome a pair of penalties, and convert long third downs. Unfortunately for the Beavers, they would turn the ball over in the red zone, as they advanced to the Millwood 13 yard line, on the drive.
In the second period, the Falcons would have one sustained drive that saw them run nine plays, and burn nearly half of the second quarter clock, following Scott City’s second turnover of the game. The game would be scoreless at halftime.
After forcing a three-and-out to begin the second half, the Beavers offense put together a seven-play drive that took them across midfield, before their third turnover and a personal foul penalty put the ball at the Scott City 43 for the Falcons. Millwood would take advantage of the penalty and turnover, as they converted a pair of fourth downs and a third down. A 12-play, 43-yard drive resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by CJ Turnbull with 2:04 to go in the third quarter to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion failed.
Scott City marched down the field on the ensuing drive. A drive that lated 7:30 would put the Beavers at the Falcon 12 on fourth and goal, but an incomplete pass would force a turnover on downs with 6:34 left. Following a Millwood three-and-out, Scott City set up shop at the Falcon 46. A seven-play drive took the ball down to their 18 yard line, but a turnover on downs ended the drive with 3:02 left. The Beavers had one more shot, but went four plays and out, and Millwood went to victory formation twice to run out the final 1:25 of the game, and escape with a 6-0 win.
In the loss, Scott City had a significant advantage in yards. They finished with 283 yards, with 186 coming on the ground. Camden Vulgamore had 84 yards on 17 carries, and went 9-23 passing for 97 yards with three interceptions. Jackson Rumford had 35 yards on two catches.
For Millwood, they finished with just 106 yards, wiht 62 coming on the ground. Lemar Davis had 32 yards on 11 carries. CJ Turnbull went 6-14 through the air for 44 y ards, with Donovan Knight hauling three catches for 23 yards.
It’s the third straight time since 2020 that Scott City was scoreless at the break with an opponent and lost. It was their first shutout at home since their loss to Southeast of Saline in 2021. Millwood’s six points were their fewest since their 24-6 loss to Chandler, OK in October of 2021.
Scott City drops to 2-1 on the year, and will wrap up their non-district schedule with their third straight home game against TMP-Marian next Friday. The Monarchs are 3-0 for a second straight year, as they rallied to defeat Plainville 36-28 at home on Friday. Millwood improved to 2-1 on the year, and will be at Alva to open up district play next Friday.
