Scott City cross country teams second at Buhler, volleyball falls in semi-final
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)—Postseason competition returned on Saturday, as the Scott City cross country teams competed at the Class 4A Regional at Buhler, while volleyball made the trek to Towanda for the Circle sub-state. The Beaver cross country teams would earn runner-up finishesand the Lady Beaver volleyball team fell in three sets to Pratt.
In Buhler, Scott City would place second in both the boys and girls races, qualifying them for state on Saturday. For the boys, Buhler won the meet, as they would have seven of the top 10 runners, and finished with 17 points. The Beavers were second with 79 points and McPherson was third with 86 points. Ivan Armendariz led the Beavers with a seventh place finish in a time of 17:47.80, while Logan Stoppel was 15th with a time of 18:23.00 and Kasten Wren was 16 in a time of 18:26.70. Isaac Bain was 20th (18:41.40), Brendan Bailey 21st (18:55.50), Spencer Cramer 24th (19:14.30) and Jace Miller finished 30th (20:22.40). On the girls side, Buhler also won with 26 points, while Scott City had 41 and McPherson finished with 64 points. Belle Trout finished in second with a time of 20:53.50, and Brinlie Stevens placed fifth with a time of 21:44.00. Halle Erazo was 11th (22:22.60), Jayden O’Brien 14th (23:13.90) and Kami Winderlin was 15th (23:22.20). The boys will run at 10 am and the girls at 11:45 am on Saturday at the Class 4A State meet in Wamego.
At Circle High School in Towanda, Scott City’s volleyball team gave it a good effort, fighting through adversity, and fell short to the Pratt Lady Greenbacks 23-25, 25-23, 25-17. The Lady Beavers were down for a large portion of the first set, as they were down 20-11. They would make a furious run, closing the set with a 14-3 run to win the set 25-23. Scott City’s first lead in the opening set was 24-23. Pratt jumped out 11-4 in the second set, only to see the Lady Beavers make a rally, pulling to within 14-13 halfway through the second set. Trailing 16-14, senior Dayanara Castillo went down with an injury and she would not return for the rest of the match. Scott City battled, despite being down 22-15. They fought to within one point at 22-21 and 24-23, before falling 25-23. The third set would go back and forth early on, but Pratt would take the lead for good at 9-8. Scott City fell behind 14-10, and pulled to within one. They rallied one more time to get to within 19-17, but the Greenbacks would score the final six points and take the set and match 25-17. Dayanara Castillo and Avery Lewis had nine kills apiece, while Megan Trout added seven kills. Kendall Gentry had four service aces, and Katie Weathers and Lewis each had two point blocks. Circle would win the sub-state with a two set win over Pratt in the finals. Scott City ended their season at 18-17, an eight-win improvement from last year.
