Holcomb splits Saturday doubleheader with Lakin

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a doubleheader that was rescheduled from Tuesday, two nearby rivals met up Saturday night at Lakin Middle School, as the Broncs played host to the Holcomb Longhorns. It would be a split, as the Lady Longhorns took the opener 41-25, while the Bronc boys picked up a 70-65 win.

In the girls game, the opening quarter would be close, as Holcomb held a 15-11 edge. The middle two quarters would be the difference in the game, as the Lady Longhorns would outscore Lakin in the second period 11-4 to take a 26-15 lead. In the third quarter, the Lady Broncs were shut out as Holcomb extended their lead to 36-15. Despite scoring only five points in the fourth, the Lady Longhorns had enough scoring to win 41-26. Halle Jones led Holcomb with 14 points, while Jera Kruleski added 11, as they have won four straight to improve to 7-2 on the year. Lakin was led by Jara Davidson with eight points, as the Lady Broncs saw their five-game win streak end. They are now 5-3 on the year.

The boys game would be a shootout. Holcomb would jump out to a lead of 22-14 at the end of the first quarter, only to see the Broncs outscore the Longhorns 21-12 in the second period to lead 35-34 at the break. After the third quarter, the teams would be tied at 48. However in the final quarter, Lakin would pull away with 22 points and hold on for a 70-65 win. Leading the way for the Broncs was Colter Oldham with 23 points, while Austin Ritsema finished with 16 points and MJ Gonzales had 10 points, as the Broncs improved to 6-2 on the year. Holcomb’s dropped to 5-4, as they were led by Drayton Knoll with a career-high 36 points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Kaeden Hardy had 14 points and Brody Deniston added 13.

Up next for Holcomb is the Hillsboro Trojan Classic on Tuesday, as the Lady Longhorns open up with Riley County at 3 pm, and the boys take on Eureka at 4:30.
