Lady Beaver softball sweeps Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their home opener on Tuesday, the Scott City Lady Beavers were looking to start the week off on a high note, as they played host to the Colby Lady Eagles. Both teams entered 2-2 on the season, and also in search of their first league win of the year. It would be Scott City, who would sweep the doubleheader, but taking an 11-1 victory in six innings in the opener, and hanging on to win 8-7 in the finale.

Scott City 11, Colby 1, Game 1 (6 Inn.)
Scott City would never trail, as they would pull away in the final six innings. They led 2-0 after three innings, before opening the game up with a three-run fourth frame. In that inning, Crissa Irvin and Malorie Cupp would drive in a pair of runs. Colby would get an RBI groundout in the fifth inning to pull to within 5-1, but the Lady Beavers responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs. In the sixth, Scott City closed the game out early with four runs, as Baylee Wolkensdorfer had a two-run single. With two outs, Piper Fox finished the game in run rule fashion with an RBI single.

Cheyenne Cramer threw only 77 pitches in six innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Malorie Cupp had two hits and three RBI in the game, while Baylee Wolkensdorfer and Piper Fox had two hits and two RBI in the opener. Ryler Carter took the loss, giving up seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. Karli Hills gave up four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning in the sixth. Madi McCarty had an RBI for Colby, as they had only two hits. 

Scott City 8, Colby 7, Game 2
The Lady Beavers built a big lead, but saw their lead evaporate and hung on in the end. Scott City put up two runs in the first inning to lead early on 2-0, which carried in to the third inning. Colby cut the deficit in half in the third inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Hailey Bolyard pulled them to within 2-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Beavers responded with two runs to push their lead to 4-1. A Malorie Cupp RBI sac fly and Jordynn Kough RBI single would drive in runs. Scott City pushed their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning, thanks to a Crissa Irvin RBI single, and a Peyton Gentry two-run double. Colby would come back and cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a Ryler Carter two-run triple. The Lady Beavers’ final run came in the bottom of the fifth on a Kaylee Felker RBI sacrifice fly that made it 8-4. Colby got a one-out solo home run by Karli Hills in the sixth. In the seventh, a pair of errors aided a comeback effort by the Lady Eagles. A Morgan Hills two run single pulled them to within 8-7 with only one out. However, the tying run would be held at second, as a ground out and a strikeout closed the door, as Scott City survived.

Cheyenne Cramer went all seven innings in game two, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on eight hits, with 12 strikeouts. Peyton Gentry had two hits and two RBI in game two, while Crissa Irvin had a three-hit game, and Cramer also had two hits. Karli Hills took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits. Ryler Carter gave up four runs on four hits and had three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Carter and Morgan Hills had two RBI, while Jalyssa Sabatka and Hayden Bellamy had two hits for Colby. 

After Tuesday, Scott City is now 4-2 on the year, and improved to 2-2 in GWAC play. They’ll be a Ulysses on Thursday for a doubleheader. Colby is now 2-4 on the year and 0-2 in league play, as they’ll be on the road to Goodland on Monday.
