Scott City shuts out Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City entered Goodland on Friday night with two goals in front of them. The opportunity was winning the GWAC title outright, and the second was picking up another district win, moving them closer to their 12th straight playoff appearance. In the end, the Beavers can check both of those off. Scott City used long running plays en route to the 28-0 win over the Cowboys, spoiling their senior night at Cowboy Stadium.

Scott City’s defense was tested at times, but held Goodland in check early on. After a Cowboy three-and-out, the Beavers capped off a four-play, 94-yard drive with a Jarret Jurgens 80 yard run with 8:20 remaining in the first quarter to go up 7-0, after the Moses Hinojos PAT. Scott City would score on their third series late in the first quarter, thanks to a Wyatt Hayes 38-yard touchdown run with 11.6 seconds left in the opening period to go up 14-0 with the Hinojos PAT.

The Beavers added one more score in the first half. A quick one-play drive saw Jurgens rush in from 73 yards out with 10:16 left in the half to go up 21-0 following the Hinojos PAT. Goodland showed some life, driving down the field on the final drive of the half. The Cowboy threat was ended by a Jurgens sack of Levi Archer at the Scott City 23 to give the Beavers a 21-0 halftime edge.

Scott City used a five-minute, 41-yard drive to cap the scoring for the night. With 6:19 left in the third quarter, Wyatt Hayes found the end zone for the second time with a 23-yard run to go up 28-0, following the Hinojos PAT. Goodland threatened three more times in the game, driving inside the Scott City 30 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs each three times during the rest of the night. One of their highlights was a 55-yard pass play from Archer to Dawson Raymer that set them up at the Scott City 15 yard line after a block in the back call.

In the fourth quarter, the Beavers had two chances to score, but a fumble and a missed field goal prevented them.

Jarret Jurgens had a career performance, with 207 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns, while Wyatt Hayes added 152 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. The Beavers rushed for a season-best 427 yards. Parker Gooden was 5-11 for 79 yards with an interception. Marshal Faurot had 61 yards receiving on three receptions. Scott City finished with a season-high 506 yards of offense.

Goodland’s Levi Archer went 13-24 passing for 150 yards. His leading receiver was Dawson Raymer, who had six receptions for 111 yards. Archer led the ground game with 17 yards on 26 carries. The Cowboys finished with 175 yards of offense.

Scott City has now won 14 straight games in the series since 2006, and won their ninth straight win in Goodland, dating back to 1998. Also in the win, the Beavers have now won their sixth GWAC crown in eight years, and the eighth league title in the last 10 since 2008. They are now 38-2 in GWAC competition since the league formed in 2010.

After Friday, Scott City is now 8-0 on the year, 2-0 in District 7 and have won 27 straight district games. The Beavers are plus-42 in the points category, and virtually have clinched their ninth straight district title, and their 12th consecutive playoff birth. Scott City travels to Concordia to wrap up the regular season next Friday night. The Panthers are 4-4 on the year, 1-1 in district play, and minus-17 in points, after a 32-14 loss to Colby on Friday. Colby is now 5-3 overall, 1-1 in district play, and minus-4 in points. Goodland visits Colby next Friday, and are 2-6 overall, 0-2 in district play, and minus-22 in points.
