GCHS Drama Department wins award at conference

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Members of the Garden City High School International Thespian Society Troupe #2846 attended the Kansas State Thespian Conference at Century II in Wichita, Kansas January 3rd – 5th. Students competed in individual events, auditioned for colleges, and applied for Gold Troupe Status.

The GCHS troupe received Gold Troupe Status winning a trophy for a fourth year in a row. This is the highest status a Kansas Troupe can achieve.

GCHS students who placed superior in their Individual Events and will be attending the International Conference in June are: Salma Roman, Costume Design for “Cinderella”; Daniel Darter, Gage Gallardo, and Jairus Lobmeyer, Group Acting. Garden City High School also took 1st place in Lobby Display.

The troupe had several students who performed well and placed at the competition. The GCHS’ One Act play, “21 Chump Street”, took 2nd place. The students in the play were: Director, AJ Ramirez, Choreographer, Lorenz Rincones, Music Direction, Nathan Ayala, and Cast: Jared Arellano, Monica Aguilar, Kimberly Loya, Lorenz Rincones, Daniel Darter, Nathan Ayala, and Andy Oyler.

AJ Ramirez won a $1000 Technical Theatre Scholarship. There were also eight seniors that auditioned for colleges receiving dozens of call-backs: Kimberly Loya, Alissa Sauseda, Lorenz Rincones, AJ Ramirez, Kaci Bunch, Antonio Vargas, Salma Roman, and Miguel Soltero.

Salma Roman, Raylyn Swank, and Colten May took 1st place in Creative Costuming. Jhamel Transfiguracion, Brenda Resendiz, Tammy Truong, and Daisy Rivas placed 2nd in Creative Costuming at the competition.

Students also attended workshops on acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre during the conference.
