Manhattan repeats as J.R. Durham Champions; seven area wrestlers claim titles

Norton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off the long break, area teams took the mat in the J.R. Durham Tournament in Norton on Saturday that featured five state-ranked teams in their classifications.

For the area, it was a good finish to the day, as seven individuals took home titles. Only one of the finals matches saw a head-to-head matchup. That came in the 126-pound weight class with Jacob Holt of Garden City and Scott City’s Justus McDaniel. McDaniel had the early lead, but it was Holt who rallied for the 10-7 win. Holt was the top seed and got a late takedown for the three-point win in a well-wrestled match.

Cimarron, Garden City and Scott City each had two champions. For the Bluejays, it was Braiden Lynn taking home the 113-pound weight class with a fall, and Josh Seabolt took home the title at 195. Garden City got the win with Holt at 126, and Elijahblu Ruiz-Hernandez was the tournament champion in the wide open 138-pound division. For Scott City, Wyatt Hayes was the winner at 170 with a major decision, and in the final match of the night, Kaden Wren stunned defending champion Ryan Johnson of Norton with a third period fall. Holcomb’s Chance Rodriguez cruised through the 182-pound weight class.

Wren was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, with his championship of the 132-pound weight class.
