Red Demon boys exercise demons at Ulysses, girls fall

Ulysses, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School basketball teams split their games at Ulysses Tuesday night. The boys won big 73-46, while the girls fell short 48-43.

Boys

Dodge City and Ulysses were tied at 13 late in the first quarter and then the avalanche happened. The Red Demons would close the quarter on a 7-0 run as part of a 26-4 run that put them up 39-17. Dodge City went into the half leading 43-26.

The Tigers hung within 13-15 points most of the third quarter before the Red Demons put it away for good in the fourth leading by as much as 30 at one point. The win ended a two game losing streak for Dodge City(8-7, 2-2) and extended a five game losing streak for Ulysses(7-9).

The Red Demons dominated the glass, winning the battle 54-35 and grabbing 19 offensive rebounds, that led to 24 second chance points. Dodge City also cashed in 18 Ulysses turnovers for 19 points. The Red Demons only shot 39 percent from the field, but offset that at the free throw line shooting 17-26, the Tigers were just 2-7.

Hunter Heath led the way again for Dodge City scoring 17 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Dawson Williams had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kaden Riekenberg and Adrian Mendoza each had 10 points. Bryan Garcia led Ulysses with 15 points in just 15 minutes.

Girls

The Dodge City girls were down just 20-19 at halftime then Ulysses outscored them 15-7 in the third quarter to seize control. At one point the lady tigers led 44-26 before the lady demons closed the game on a 17-4 run, but it was too little too late.

Ulysses(10-6) controlled the glass outrebounding Dodge 33-27, including 13 offensive rebounds for 10 second chance points. As a team the lady tigers 6-11 from three and 18-48 from the field, while the lady demons shot just 14-39.

Gina Ballesteros led the way for Ulysses with 20 points on 5-6 from three. Riley Oglevie had a double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. Chidera Okoro led Dodge City(8-7, 2-2) for the second straight game with 10 points. Kisa Unruh and Lauren Gleason both scored 8.
