Dodge City girls to Manhattan, boys to Haysville-Campus for Sub-State

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has announced the pairings for next week’s class 6A Sub-State games. The announcement came after a seeding meeting, a meeting in which class 6A is divided into two divisions, both an east and a west full of 18 teams.

The Dodge City girls will travel to Manhattan to take on the Indians in the first round with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The Lady Demons earned the No. 11 seed with an 8-11 record, while Manhattan received the No. 6 seed with a 13-6 record.

Dodge City and Manhattan are familiar with each other, as they have met multiple times in the past. In fact, the Lady Demons hosted the Lady Indians last season on Dec. 8, 2017. Manhattan made the trip out west and demolished Dodge City, 62-30. That was the same Manhattan team that finished 20-3 and lost in the first round of the 6A state tournament.

The Indians have won the past five meetings with the Red Demons dating back to 2012. Dodge City’s last win in the series came in 2009, when they defeated Manhattan, 54-40.

Dodge City is scheduled to play Hays on Thursday to close out the regular season. That game will count towards the overall record, but will not matter for Sub-State standings.

The Dodge City boys will make the road trip to Haysville, a suburb of Wichita to take on the Campus Colts on Wednesday evening with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The Red Demons will be the No. 11 seed with an 9-10 record, while Campus is the No. 6 seed with a 16-4 record.

The Colts have been a team on the rise this year and have surprised a lot of people throughout the season. They play in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League with Derby, Hutch, Maize, Newton, Salina Central and Salina South. The Red Demons have already played Hutch, Maize and Newton this season and have seen Derby play, so Dodge City will at least have a good idea about the Colts with many similar opponents.

Campus will be a new addition to the Tournament of Champions next January, as they will make their first appearance at the 77th Annual TOC. Dodge City and the Colts last met on March 4, 2015 in Sub-State with the Colts winning that one, 53-52.

Dodge City is scheduled to play Hays on Thursday to close out the regular season. That game will count towards the overall record, but will not matter for Sub-State standings.
