Scott City volleyball sweeps Ulysses

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For a majority of the decade, the Ulysses Lady Tiger volleyball team has been the dominant team in not only the GWAC, but in southwest Kansas. That included their hover over Scott City. Tuesday night at Scott Community High School, the Lady Beavers and Lady Tigers took the court in a dual in their first meeting of the year.

The night would belong to the veteran Scott City squad, as they were able withstand any comeback from a young Ulysses team, completing a three-set sweep 25-11, 25-18, 25-15.

Scott City set the tone early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead early on, only to see Ulysses use a 5-1 run to tie the opening set at nine. That would be the only time the Lady Tigers would be close. The Lady Beavers would explode with a 16-2 run to end the first set, including an 11-0 run after it was tied at nine, to take a convincing 25-11 win.

Things weren’t so easy for Scott City for much of the second set. Ulysses would grab a pair of early leads, but only by one point each time. Leading 8-6, the Lady Beavers busted out for seven straight to take a 15-5 lead. However, the Lady Tigers would make a big comeback. They used a 10-3 run to pull to within 18-15, heading to the final stretch of the third set. Scott City would settle down, and pull away with a 7-3 run of their on to take the 25-18 win.

In the third set, it was tight early on. After Ulysses pulled to within 9-6, the Lady Beavers put the match away with a 10-1 run and led 18-7. The Lady Tigers would get no closer than eight the rest of the way, as Scott City cruised to the 25-15 win, completing the three-set sweep.

It was the first win for the Lady Beavers over Ulysses since 2016.

The Lady Beavers got nine kills and two block points from Emily Weathers, seven kills and three aces from Lyndi Rumford, while Ella Rumford added three aces and four kills, Kennedy Holstein added four kills and an ace, and Abby McDaniel had four aces. Scott City finished with 13 aces in the match.

Scott City is 6-2 on the season, and will head to Hoxie on Thursday for a triangular with Hill City and Hoxie, while Ulysses drops to 3-4, and will be at the Larned triangular on Thursday.
