Stanton County, Hodgeman County girls earn second place in final day of State Track & Field Championships

Wichita, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the third and final day of the State Track & Field Championships, Classes 1A & 2A made the trek to Cessna Stadium in Wichita on a cooler day than normal.

It would be a good day for area teams and athletes, as the Stanton County girls and Hodgeman County girls would finish in second place in Class 2A and 1A respectively.

For the girls, Garden Plain would be dominant in Class 2A, as they finished with 108 points, while Stanton County was second with 44 points and Valley Heights had 44 points to place third. Syracuse was tied for 23rd with 10 points, Sublette recorded four points and finished in 35th, while Wichita County and Elkhart were in 43rd place with two points. Sophomore Chesney Peterson from Stanton County had a big day, taking the gold in the 3200, 1600, and 800 runs, and was on the winning 4x400M relay team. She broke a 33-year old meet record in the 1600M run.

In the Class 1A Girls, Kiowa County dominated with 64 points, and Hodgeman County edged Beloit-St. John’s and Decatur Community for second place with 34, as those teams tied for third with 34 points. Ingalls and Satanta had 20 points, good for 12th place, Meade was 20th with 11 points, South Gray was 29th with eight points, Kinsley 36th with six points, and Bucklin 43rd with four points. Kaylee James for Hodgeman County had a big day, winning the 300M Hurdles, was second in the 100M Hurldes and was on the second place 4x100M Relay.

On the boys Class 2A side, Garden Plain won with 73 points, while KC Christian was second with 44 and Oakley placed third with 37 points. Wichita County was fifth with 33 points, while Stanton County had 18.5 points and was 15th, Spearville was 30th with six points and Syracuse was 40th with two points. Sheldon Whalen repeated as champion in the 300M hurdles, and Tristen Porter was second in the Pole Vault.

In Class 1A, Hanover rallied late to win the meet with 55 points, while Madison was second with 48 and Osborne came in third with 42 points. Meade was eighth with 32 points, South Gray 11th with 21 points, Dighton finished in 13th with 17 points, Bucklin was 14th with 16, Fowler came in 17th with 12 points, Moscow and Ness City had five points and finished in 34th, Minneola had 3 points in 45th and Rolla was 52nd with one point. Vance Shewey from Meade took the High Jump title with a jump of 6-10, the Meade boys won the 4x800M Relay, South Gray saw Ethan Salmans take the 110M High Hurdles, and Dighton’s Max Neeley was the champion in the Pole Vault.
