By Adam Kadavy

September 6

The Scott City Beavers held off a furious rally Friday night over Garden City 16-14 in front of a standing room only crowd at Memorial Stadium in Garden City. Both teams headed to the locker room scoreless at halftime. Scott City opened up the second half on a 66-yard drive, capped off by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Ron Baker to Luke Hayes. Brett O'Neil tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0. On the ensuing drive for Garden City, quarterback Cody Bernbeck was sacked in the end zone for a safety to make it 9-0 for the visiting Beavers. With 11:21 left, Baker went in for six with a quarterback sneak from one yard out, O'Neil hit the pat to make it 16-0 Beavers. When it looked like Scott City had control of the game, the Beavers fumbled at their own 41, then the Buffalo comeback took place. Garden City scored with six-yard run by Zach Lamb with with 7:38 left, and they cut the lead in half with the two-point conversion from Bernbeck to Keith Curran. After a fourth down stop by the Buffaloes, Garden City completed a 53-yard touchdown pass from Bernbeck to Raul Silva with 3:25 remaining. The two-point conversion failed to keep the score at 16-14. After a Scott City punt, the Buffaloes drove down the field to the Scott City 11 late in the game. On a second down play, the snap went over Bernbeck's head and he fell on it at the 32 yard line, forcing Garden City to burn their final timeout. After a short pass completion to the 27, the game was decided on a 44-yard field goal attempt by Carlos Chavez. His kick fell short and off to the right, giving Scott City their first win over Garden City since 1940. Scott City was led on the ground by senior fullback Jason Williams, who had 91-yards rushing on 20 carries. Garden City was led by Cody Bernbeck, who went 13-22 for 172 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Scott City will be at Holcomb for a 7:30 kickoff Friday night, while Garden City travels to Woodward, OK for a 7:30 start this Friday.

August 30

With poise and leadership, freshmen quarterback Wes Winfrey out of SWH High School led the Garden City Community College Busters Football Team to victory in their season opener Saturday night at Memorial Stadium 32-23 over the Norsemen of Northeastern Oklahoma A & M.  It was a close game throughout the night as the Busters took the lead early in the game and at intermission time, but fell behind in the second half then stormed  back for the nine point victory.  Garden City drew first blood with 10:38 left in the first quarter, as red-shirt freshmen Keion Wade hit paydirt on a 2 yard run, David Gonzales connected on the extra point and the Busters led 7-0.  On the next series for NEO, the Norsemen used the rush to get down field in a hurry and capped it off with a 7 yard run by Terrence Olds for the touchdown, they added the extra point and it was tied at 7-7.  With just 12 seconds left before halftime, sophomore David Gonzales connected on one of his two field goals on the night from 36 yards out to give the Busters a 10-7 lead at the break.  Early in the second half, the Norsemen used the rush and the pass to get down field, and with 10:51 left in the 3rd period, Jermaine Sherman caught a 37 yard TD pass from Marsaln, added the extra point and had the lead 14-10.  However, it was short lived, as the Busters put together a well orchestrated 52 yard drive and finished it off with a 23 yard TD pass from Winfrey to Cory Johnson, Gonzales added the point after an the Busters had regained the lead and never looked back.  Cory Johnson scored again on again on a 54 yard TD pass from Winfrey, Gonzales hit another field goal from 44 yards out, then T. J Johnson hauled in an 18 yard TD pass from Winfrey, Gonzales missed his second point after and the Busters had sealed the victory at 32-23.  Garden City is now 1-0 and will begin Jayhawk Conference play next Saturday on the road at  Highland Community College who was hammered by # 23 Iowa Western earlier last Saturday 63-6.  Game time with the Scotties on September 4th is set for 1:00pm, be sure to join Jerry Jones and Coach George Caine for the call, beginning with 12:30 pre-game show on your voice for the Busters on AM1030 KBUF.
