Scott City collects road sweep in Ulysses

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After Scott City and Ulysses had their games postponed on Friday due to the snowfall, the teams would meet up on Tuesday night in Ulysses for a pair of GWAC matchups at Ulysses High School. It would be a sweep for the Beavers as the girls jumped out early and cruised to a 53-42 win, while the boys rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit and picked up a 46-42 road win.

The Lady Beavers couldn’t have scripted a better start. Scott City scored the first 12 points of the game, including four points in the opening 16 seconds of the contest. They built a 20-4 first quarter lead and ballooned their lead to 38-15 at the break. The Lady Tigers had some fight, but Scott City (3-5, 2-2 GWAC) would punch right back, growing their lead to 49-21 late in the third quarter. It would be big for the Lady Beavers to build their lead, because the offense would go silent in the final eight minutes. Ulysses (2-7, 0-4) would make the final closer than the game had been, thanks to a 20-4 run in the final eight minutes. Scott City did not convert a field goal for the final 9:21 of the ball game, but picked up a 53-42 win.

Piper Fox led all scorers for Scott City with 16 points, while Crissa Irvin poured in a career-high 14 points and Lily Lightner added in a career-best 13 points. The Lady Beavers went 13-20 at the free throw line and had 20 turnovers. Ulysses got 15 poitns from Xitlaly Castillo, as they were 9-19 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers.

Scott City has now won 11 straight in the series, and now leads the series 54-37 since 1980. It’s the second longest win streak by the Lady Beavers in the series.

In the first eight minutes, it looked like it was going to be a Ulysses runaway. The last 24 minutes proved to be different. Scott City grabbed an early 5-2 lead, before the Tigers clsoed the final 5:46 of the first quarter with a 16-2 run to lead 18-7 after the opening period. The Beavers would erace a nearly seven-minute field goal drought with the first four pounts of the second quarter, and got to within seven on a pair of occasions. Ulysses took a 29-20 lead in to the locker room. To open the second half, Scott City (4-4, 2-2 GWAC) scored the first four points to pull to within five at the five minute mark of the third quarter, only to see the Tigers respond with the next five points to lead 34-24 with 2:44 left in the third stanza. The Beavers scored the next eight points to grab a 36-35 lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Their lead would be short-lived, as Ulysses (4-5, 1-3) scored seven of the next nine points to lead 42-38 with 4:10 left. That would be the final points of the night. Scott City would go ahead with 1:51 left on a Brody Stoecklein basket, and Junior Meza gave them a four-point lead with 12.8 seconds left with a pair of free throw.s That was their largest lead of the night. The Beavers outscored the Tigers 26-13 in the second half, as they picked up a 46-42 road win.

Junior Meza led the Beavers with 16 points, as Scott City went 7-7 at the charity line and had 10 turnovers. Julian Merz led Ulysses with 15 points, all coming in the first half. The Tigers were 3-6 from the free throw line and committed 10 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has won three straight and have won nine of the last 12 in the series. They lead the series since 1980 63-26.

Scott City will return home to face the Colby Eagles on Friday night before tournament play at Sterling next Tuesday. The Lady Eagles are 5-4 after a 23-20 win at Goodland, while their boys are 7-2 following a 52-46 win at Goodland. Ulysses visits Holcomb on Friday. The Lady Longhorns defeated Lakin 54-26 to improve to 9-1, while the boys are 10-0 following their win over the Broncs 65-32.
