Ulysses girls, Wray boys, take home Scott City Wrestling Classic team championships
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Saturday saw a full lineup of boys and girls teams make their way to Scott City for the 41st Annual Scott City Wrestling Classic at the Scott Community Events Center. The Ulysses girls would win their first-ever Scott City tournament title, while the Wray boys would rally in the final round late to upend Scott City for the boys title.
Starting off with the girls, Ulysses, was able to hold off St. Francis and Scott City for the team title, as the Lady Indians were able to get past the Lady Beavers late for the second place plaque. Individually for the Lady Tigers, they would not get an individual tournament title, but had plenty of second place finishes, including Yosselin Delgado at 100, Lyla Eddie at 110, Jeymi Rosales at 125, and Britnee Hittle at 140. Scott City saw Haylie McDaniel take the title at 110. Holcomb was fifth, as McKenzie Simon was a champion at 135. Wichita County was eighth, with Jentri Porter at 105 and Jaelene Vestal at 170 winning their brackets. Cimarron was 11th with Peyton Smith taking the 235-pound weight class. Hugoton was 14th and Lakin was 15th. Zoey Garcia of Larned won the Fastest Fall award with a 12-second fall, and the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler went to Rawlins County’s Maggie Holle, who was the 130-pound champion.
On the boys side, it would go back and forth between Wray and Scott City for the tournament title. The Eagles would get a win at 190 to win the title for a second straight win, as the Beavers finished in second. Scott City would have one winner, as Blaze Gossman was the 165-pound champion. Trenton Frank finished second, as he won his 100th career match in the semis. Ulysses place third, with Maddox Delgado winning at 126. Hugoton was sixth, as Isaiah Peachey took the title at 113, and Von Grubbs was the champion at 175. Cimarron came in seventh, with Ben Vogel claiming the title at 215 pounds. Holcomb was a half-point behind Cimarorn in eighth place, with Angelo Otero winning the title at 120. Lakin was ninth, as Alex Robles was the champion at 144. Wichita County finished in 14th, with their lone tournament champion Tyson Peters winning at 138. Stanton County was 19th. Hunter Spencer of Ulysses won the Fastest Fall award with a five-second fall, which is the quickets fall in tournament history. Wray’s Austin Collins repeated as the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler. He will be wrestling collegiately at Wyoming.
