Coffeyville, KS — The Garden City Community College men’s basketball team got a jolt early from Jordan Nevill, but the Broncbusters couldn’t overcome Coffeyville’s efficiency and rebounding down the stretch, falling 90–82 on Saturday afternoon in a KJCCC road matchup.

The opening minutes were frantic and physical, with both teams trading fouls and possessions before Coffeyville struck first at the line. Garden City answered immediately, and it was Nevill who set the tone—burying a three at 19:31, then splashing another on the next trip to push the Broncbusters in front 6–1 and quiet the home crowd. His early burst, combined with Garden City’s pressure defense, helped create steals and quick scoring chances as the Busters tried to seize control.

Coffeyville responded with a tough, inside-out approach that steadily wore on Garden City. The Red Ravens leaned on second-chance opportunities and strong finishes around the rim, while Garden City stayed within striking distance with timely buckets from Jamir Westry and Lucas Kalimba. The game turned into a back-and-forth battle through the middle of the half, but Coffeyville’s ability to convert at the rim and at the free-throw line helped them build a small cushion late. The Broncbusters had chances to trim it even closer in the final minute, but Coffeyville closed the half with a score at the rim to take a 47–42 lead into halftime.

Garden City came out with urgency after the break. Westry attacked downhill and finished through contact, Kalimba hit shots to keep the pressure on, and the Broncbusters briefly made it a one-possession game with stretches of strong defense. But each time Garden City threatened to flip momentum, Coffeyville answered—often by extending possessions with offensive rebounds or getting back to the stripe.

The defining difference came in the “extra” categories. Coffeyville won the rebounding battle 41–32 and generated 20 second-chance points compared to Garden City’s 15, allowing the Red Ravens to maintain control even when the Broncbusters found rhythm offensively.

Individually, Garden City received a strong overall effort from Westry, who led the Broncbusters with 19 points and added 5 assists, while shooting an efficient 8-of-10 from the field.
Nevill made his return felt right away and finished with 17 points, drilling 5-of-9 from three to give Garden City a consistent perimeter threat throughout the afternoon.
Dasean Lewis chipped in 13 points with 3 threes, and Kalimba added 9 points and 7 rebounds to help stabilize the Broncbusters inside.

Coffeyville was led by a nearly perfect offensive night from inside the arc, highlighted by Rashid Kuta’s 21 points on 10-of-10 shooting and steady contributions from several starters as the Red Ravens finished the game shooting 50.8% from the floor and converting 25 free throws.

Next Up:
The Broncbusters return to Conestoga Arena for a KJCCC matchup against Hutchinson Community College next Wednesday, as Garden City looks to bounce back in front of the home crowd.
