Not enough to grab win at Capital City Classic

The Garden City High School girls’ basketball team made sure to make some noise at the Glaciers Edge Capital City Classic this week.

They did so by defeating Topeka-Seaman 59-48 on Thursday and then made a run at No. 2-ranked Class 6A Wichita Heights before falling 57-42 in Friday night’s semifinal battle at Topeka High School.

The loss drops the Lady Buffs’ season record to 9-6, and they will play in the third-place game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Shawnee Heights, which lost to No. 3-ranked Derby in the other semifinal, 80-44. Shawnee Heights is 11-4.

The Lady Buffs fell behind early and could never catch up but also stayed within range of the Falcons until late in the fourth quarter when an eight-point lead ballooned to double digits.

Heights was ahead 13-5 after one quarter and then held a 24-18 halftime margin. The Buffs kept it close and went into the fourth quarter down by just eight, 37-29, going to the fourth quarter. The Lady Falcons then went on a 20-13 blitz to pull away.

Mia Hannagan and Tegan Snodgrass each scored 10 points for the Buffs. Hannagan was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line but managed just one 3-pointer. Snodgrass hit three field goals and went 4-of-8 at the charity stripe.

Heights, meanwhile, got a balanced scoring attack with Jocelyn Rose leading the way with 16 points while Aniyah Harris was next with 14 and Deshay Maze chipped in wth 10.

After Saturday’s concluding tournament game, the Buffs will return home and have just two days to prepare for their return to Western Athletic Conference action with a road game at rival Dodge City on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In consolation games played earlier Friday, Topeka-Seaman bounced Topeka-Highland Park, 62-32, while Topeka High edged Lawrence High, 75-72.

The Saturday schedule calls for Highland Park (4-9) to face Lawrence High (6-7) for 7th place at 10 a.m.; Seaman (7-5) will play Topeka High (6-7) in the fifth-place game at 11:30 before the Lady Buffs play Shawnee Heights (11-4) in the third-place contest. The championship game will tip-off about 20 minutes after the Lady Buffs’ game is completed.
