Longhorns pick up doubleheader sweep over Scott City
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the final month of the regular season is upon us, two GWAC rivals met up on Tuesday night at Holcomb High School, as the Longhorns played host to Scott City, as the teams continue to fight for position in the 3A Larned Regional standings. It would be a sweep for Holcomb, as the girls picked up a 65-33 win, while the boys held off the Beavers 56-49.

The Lady Longhorns took their momentum after Saturday’s big win over Remington in to Tuesday night, as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Scott City would trail 15-3 late in the opeing period, before they scored the final five points of the quarter to pull to within 15-8 after the first quarter. Holcomb (14-2, 5-1 GWAC) used the three-pointer to extend their lead in the second quarter to 33-19 at the break. They scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend their lead to 43-19 with 5:06 left in the third quarter. The Lady Beavers were unable to get a run going in the second half, as the Lady Longhorns took a 56-25 lead going into the final quarter. A continuous clock would commence in the fourth quarter, as Scott City (5-10, 2-6) scored the final five points of the game, as Holcomb picked up a 65-33 victory.
Jaylee Wickwar led all scorers with 23 points, while Zoey Cranston had 12 poitns and Isabella Galliart added 11. Holcomb finished 7-11 from the charity line and committed nine turnovers. Scott City was led by Payson Campbell with a career-high nine points, all on triples, as they were 5-12 from the foul line and finished with 12 turnovers.
With the win, Holcomb has now won 11 straight, and 12 of the last 13 games in the series, and hold a 41-27 series lead. After Tuesday, the Lady Longhorns remain in the top spot of the Class 3A-Larned Regional standings, while Scott City remains in 11th.

No. 3 Holcomb 56, Scott City 49
The Beavers were playing their third consecutive ranked opponent, as they faced a Holcomb team that picked up a big win against Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon. After Scott City led 2-0 early on, the Longhorns scored the next seven and never trailed the rest of the night. A 10-0 Holcomb (13-3, 4-2 GWAC) run from late in the first to early in the second pushed their lead to 20-8 with 6:09 left before halftime. The Beavers battled back and eventually trailed 31-25 at the break. In the middle of the two periods, the Longhorns used big runs that proved to be the difference. They started out with the first nine points of the second half to lead 40-25 with five minutes left in the third stanza. Scott City (8-7, 4-4) pulled to within 44-34 after the third quarter, and after Holcomb led 51-36 with six minutes left, the Beavers used an 11-2 run to pull to within 53-47 with one minute left. The Longhorns would hit three of four free throws down the stretch and picked up the 56-49 win.
Brody Deniston led the Longhorns with 15 points, while Ayden Brown had 11 and Luke Thyne finished with 10 points. The Longhorns went 6-9 from the free throw line and had 10 turnovers. Scott City was led by Avery Radke with 21 points, as they finished 6-9 at the foul line and finished with 17 turnovers.
Holcomb has won two straight, as they have now tied the series at 35 wins apiece. They remain at the top of the Class 3A-Larned Regional standings by a one half game over Beloit, while Scott City is now eighth in the standings.
