Garden City, Kan.–An early-morning crash Monday prompted a large emergency response to the Mary Street area and disrupted power for many residents.

Shortly after 5 a.m., the Garden City Police Department reports that first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Mary and A Streets for a reported injury crash involving a vehicle that struck a utility pole and rolled over. When they arrived, Officers found a heavily damaged GMC Yukon and significant damage along the south side of the 100 block of W. Mary Street. The utility pole had been displaced roughly 15 feet, leaving live wires across the area. A damaged school speed limit sign was also located nearby. City Electric and Public Works crews responded to the scene to begin repairs and cleanup efforts. Many nearby residents experienced power outages, and electric crews worked throughout the day to make repairs and restore service as safely and quickly as possible.

Further investigation revealed the driver, a 19-year-old man, initially fled from the crash but was located shortly afterward and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.
