GARDEN CITY, KS – Garden City Community College erupted for 15 runs but could not withstand a late offensive surge from Dodge City Community College, falling 16-15 in a wild Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday.

The Broncbusters jumped out to a commanding early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to build a 7-0 advantage before Dodge City began to chip away.

Garden City’s explosive first inning was sparked by patience and timely hitting. After loading the bases with three hit-by-pitches, Karson Evans delivered a sacrifice fly before Mason Tafoya drove in two with a single. Aiden Wilson capped the frame with a two-run home run to give the Broncbusters early control.

The Broncbusters extended the lead in the second, capitalizing on additional free passes as Evans drew a bases-loaded walk and Tafoya was hit by a pitch to bring home another run.

Dodge City broke through in the third before a pivotal fourth inning shifted momentum. The Conquistadors used walks, a hit batter, and a key RBI sequence to plate four runs and cut into the deficit.

Garden City answered with two runs in the bottom half, but Dodge City continued to apply pressure. A two-run home run in the fifth helped the Conquistadors pull within striking distance before a decisive eighth-run seventh inning flipped the game entirely.

Trailing late, the Broncbusters mounted one final push in the seventh. Mason Tafoya was hit by a pitch to drive in a run before Roy Higinbotham delivered the biggest swing of the game, launching a grand slam to bring Garden City within one.

Despite the rally, the Broncbusters could not complete the comeback, falling just short in a high-scoring contest that featured 31 combined runs and 24 hits.

Offensively, Garden City totaled 15 runs on 12 hits, led by Tafoya’s five RBIs. Higinbotham added four RBIs on his pinch-hit grand slam, while Aiden Wilson recorded a home run and two RBIs. Cael Hamrick also contributed three hits in the effort.
