Inmate at Grant County Jail briefly escapes Sunday
Grant County, Kan.–An inmate at the Grant County Jail briefly escaped Sunday in Ulysses.
According to the release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, inmate Javier Ayala escaped from the jail. Due to the quick response and coordination between Grant County Dispatch, deputies with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the Ulysses Police Department and personnel from Grant County EMS, a perimeter was established within minutes of the escape being reported.
Ayala was located and taken back into custody within approximately one block of the facility after a short search.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Ulysses Police Department, Grant County EMS, dispatch personnel and citizens who assisted or provided information during the incident. Their quick actions played an important role in the safe and rapid apprehension of the inmate.
An internal investigation has been ordered by the Sheriff, into the circumstances surrounding the escape. That investigation is ongoing and will examine how the incident occurred, as well as what corrective actions or security measures may be necessary to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
