Hugoton pulls away from Ulysses late

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–When the Hugoton Eagles and the Ulysses Tigers meet on the field, it is always a battle. You can also include that it was the Eagle Homecoming. It just addesd fuel to the fire in the big rivalry game. The Eagles used an air attack to get the victory, 31 to 14 over the Tigers.

It was the Tigers that struck first, taking the opening kickoff right down the field for a score.  The Tigers drove for over 6 minutes, capped off by 1 yard run by QB Justin Degallado, the extra point failed, and the Tigers led 6-0.  The Eagles answered with what would be the theme of the night – a 49-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Issac Martin to senior Santiago Macias.  The extra point was successful and the Eagle led 7-6.  In the 2nd quarter, both teams scored touchdowns, a 14-yard run by Tiger back Lorenzo Gomez. The 2-point conversion was good.  And for the Eagles, a 1 yard run by Adam Mendoza, capped off a 68 yard drive answered the Tiger score.   The difference in the 1st half score was a 33-yard successful Eagle field goal by sophomore kicker, Christian Zizumbo, and the Eagles went into half with the 17-14 lead.

Both team failed to put points on the board in the 3rd quarter.  The Eagles closed out the victory with two scores in the 4th.  Martin and Macias again hooked up for a touchdown pass of 30 yards, and QB Martin then closed out the game with a 1-yard run with time running out.

Issac Martin would lead the Eagles with (unofficially) 229 yards in passing spreading the ball around to 5 different receivers.

With the 31-14 win, the Eagles move to 2-0 on the season, and the Tigers go to 1-1.  The Eagles with be on the road for the first time this season, facing another Tiger team in Guymon Ok.  Kickoff set for 7pm.
