Holcomb sweeps Friday games

Hillsboro, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Holcomb picked up two wins in round two of the Hillsoboro Trojan Classic on Friday. The Lady Longhorns won 49-46 over Hillsboro in the championship semi-finals, while the Holcomb boys won 60-20 over Eureka in the consolation semi-finals.

Holcomb Girls 49, Hillsboro 46
The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 9-2 lead with five points from Halle Jones with five minutes to go in the first quarter. Hillsboro went on a 12-2 run to end the first quarter up 14-11. The second quarter was back and forth, but the Trojans would take a 26-22 lead into halftime. In the third quarter Hillsboro would get the lead to eight points at 30-22 with four minutes left in the quarter. Holcomb would respond and go on a 12-2 run to be up 34-32 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was back and forth and Hillsboro took the lead 43-42 on a three by Savannah Shahan with 1:15 to go in the game. On the next possession Kalyn King hit a layup to give Holcomb the lead 44-43 with one minute to go. Shahan hit an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Trojans the lead 46-44 with 30 seconds left. Jera Kruleski hit a three on the next possession to give the Longhorns back the lead with 15 seconds left at 47-46. Great defense by Holcomb forced a bad shot. Brookly Deniston then hit two free throws to give the Longhorns a three-point lead with seven seconds left in the game. Strong defense by Holcomb did not allow Hillsboro to get a shot off, as the Lady Longhorns pull out the win 49-46

Hillsboro shot 3-15 from three point, 18-53 from inside, and 7-11 from the free throw line. They had 30 rebounds, 14 of those were offensive boards. The Trojans had 13 turnovers.

Hillsboro was led by Savannah Shahan with 17 points, and Zaylee Werth with 22 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Holcomb shot 5-12 from three point, 16-43 from inside, and 12-17 from the freethrow line, and went 8-11 in the fourth quarter. They had 25 rebounds, nine of those were offensive boards. The Longhorns had 13 turnovers

Holcomb was led by Halle Jones with 11 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, Bella Galliart with 14 points, and Jera Kruleski with 17 points.

Holcomb moved to 9-2 on the season and will play in the Championship game of the Trojan Classic on Saturday at 5:45 pm against Hesston.

Holcomb Boys 60, Eureka 20
The Holcomb boys started strong and led 8-0 with five minutes left in the first quarter. They would lead 13-2 going into the second quarte, as they continued to control the game and would lead 27-8 at halftime. In the second half the Longhorns cruised and led 43-17 at the end of the third quarter. Holcomb forced a running clock in the fourth quarter and coasted to a 60-20 win.

Eureka shot 1-5 from three point, 6-22 from inside, and 5-7 from the free throw line. They had 11 rebounds, and just one of those were offensive boards. The Tornadoes had 15 turnovers.

Eureka was led by Trey Howard with five points, and Lyle Perrier with eight points.

Holcomb shot 8-23 from three point, 16-28 from inside, and 4-4 at the free throw line. They had 40 rebounds, as 17 of those were offensive boards.  The Longhorns had nine turnovers.

Holcomb was led by Brody Deniston with eight points, Kaden Hardy with eight points, Drayton Knoll with 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Chris Palacios with 15 points.

Holcomb Boys moved to 7-4 on the season and will play in the 5th place game of the Trojan Classic Saturday at 1:00 pm against Riley County.
