Scott City opens season with Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A brand new season begins tonight for the Scott City Beavers, as they play host to the Cimarron Bluejays to open the 2024 season at Darner Field. Tonight’s game is Military Apprecation Night.

Cimarron had a tough 2023 season, going 1-8, and faced two of the top four teams in Class 2A in back to back weeks to close the season. The Bluejays do return a strong nucleus on both sides of the ball, that saw them average 19 points per contest last year, while allowing 42 points. Trace Kopper returns as the signal caller, as he passed for 900 and rushed for over 900 yards a year ago, and combined for 15 touchdowns for Cimarron. Logan Seifried returns as their top tackler from last season with 95 tackles and two sacks for teh Bluejays.

Scott City is coming off its second straight 8-2 season, falling to Andale in the Regional round of the Class 3A playoffs. While the Beavers will have new starters in the backfield, Camden Vulgamore returns as the starting quarterback, after a 1400-ard passing performance with 17 touchdowns last year, and four rushing scores. Alex Tarango moves to the backfield after having nearly 400 receiving yards and two touchdowns and Jackson Rumford had four touchdown receptions a year ago at tight end on a team that averaged 35 points and 320 yards per contest in 2023. Defensively, Scott City gave up 14 poitns and 208 yards per game last season, as Case Armendariz is the returning top tackler with 61 tackles and three sacks, while Oscar Mendez had 59 tackles a year ago.

This will be the 24th meeting in the series, as Scott City leads the series 16-7. The Beavers have won the last two meetings, including a 49-13 victory last year that saw Cimarron lead 7-0 after the first quarter.

A Scott City win would give them their 8th straight season-opening win.

Kickoff from Darner Field is at 7 pm, with a 6:30 pregame on KSKL, Mix 94.5, and online at https://www.westernkansasnews.com/?page_id=627.
