Scott City volleyball sweeps Hoxie triangular, cross country has good showing in Hesston

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday saw a pair of the fall sports teams hit the road for competition for the Beavers, as volleyball went to Hoxie for a triangular against Hoxie and Hill City, while cross country went to Hesston for the Swather Special.

Starting off with volleyball, the Lady Beavers continued their run of wins, as they would take both matches on the road. Their first match put them against Hoxie, who is ranked No. 5 in Class 2A. Scott City would squeak out a 25-23 win in the opening set, and cruise in the second set 25-12. In a quick turnaround against Hill City, the Lady Beavers dropped the opening set 25-21, but came back in the final two, to take wins of 25-14, 25-18 over the Lady Ringnecks. Scott City is now 7-6 on the year, and will have a week off before traveling to Dighton to face Dighton and Wichita County next Thursday.

Cross Country made their way to Hesston for the Swather Special on Thursday. Scott City would compete in the Large Division, which would be Class 4A-6A. The race was ran by grade. On the boys side, the Beavers would place third, behind first place Garden City with 15 points, and Dodge City was second with 32. Scott City had 55 points. Starting with the seniors, Logan Stoppel was third with a time of 17:54.2, Zach O’Brien was 10th with a time of 19:12.0, Jace Miller was 13th in a time of 19:35.0 and Waylon Rickers was 15th with a time of 19:49.8. In the junior race, Kasten Wren placed sixth with a time of 18:35.0, Spencer Cramer 10th (19:27.4) and Avery Radke was 15th (21:01.4). Emilo Alarcon was 11th in the sophomore division in a time of 20:43.6, and in the freshman division, Michael Hermosillo won the race in a time of 17:58.9. For the girls, Scott City placed fifth overall. Garden City and Dodge City took the top two spots. Starting with the juniors, Belle Trout was second in a time of 22:08.5, and Jayden O’Brien placed 17th with a time of 27:39.4. Halle Erazo was fifth in the sophomore, running a time of 23:25.3. For the freshman, Brailey Cook finished fourth in a time of 23:45.7, Maci Lara was ninth (24:58.4) and Hannah Winter was 10th (25:01.0). Scott City will run at the Hugoton Invitational on Saturday, September 21.
