Big second quarter propels Scott City to big win over Ulysses

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City entered Ulysses as a heavy favorite over the Tigers on Friday night in the first meeting of two longtime rivals in three seasons. While the score was close in the first quarter, the Beavers delivered a knockout blow with 27 second quarter points in a 57-8 rout over Ulysses at Maxwell Field.

Scott City would score on their first play from scrimmage on Friday night. A 64-yard run by Cayden Couchman put the Beavers up 6-0 after the missed extra point. After holding Ulysses to a three-and-out, a high snap into the end zone led to a safety, as Camden Vulgamore tackled Tiger punter Jesus Miranda in the back of the end zone to push the lead to 8-0 with 8:02 left in the first quarter. Three plays after the free kick, Camden Vulgamore scored from two yards out, and Kelton Cook’s two-point conversion extended the lead to 16-0 with 8:02 left in the opening quarter. Ulysses (0-4) would get on the board on their first play of their next drive. The Tigers took advantage of a Scott City player slipping and falling on the turf, as Julian Meraz would haul in a catch from Tyce Perez, and score on an 80-yard touchdown pass, and Perez ran in the two-point conversion to pull the Tigers to within 16-8 at the 7:47 mark of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Beavers would score three times in the first three minutes. Their first came on a Vulgamore 15-yard run with 11:41 left before the break, as Jackson Rumford’s PAT extended the lead to 23-8. The Tigers fumbled on the ensuing kickoff at their own 30. Scott City would strike quickly on a 30-yard pass from Vulgamore to Alex Tarango to extend the lead to 37-8 with the Rumford PAT. Following a Ulysses interception, Scott City (3-1) scored once more before the break on Vallejo’s second score of the night with 1:40 left before halftime on a one-yard plunge. The extra point was blocked, and it would be 43-8 at the break.

Scott City scored twice in the third quarter, which would force a continuous clock in the fourth quarter. Their first score came on a Kevin Wiebe eight-yard run with 7:46 left in the third to go up 50-8 with the Junior Meza extra point, and Vallejo scored from nine yards otu with 2:54 left in the third frame on a nine-yard run to go up 57-8 with the Meza extra point.
