Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers had their first true road game on Tuesday night, as they opened up GWAC play on the road against the Goodland Cowboys and Cowgirls. It would be a tall task facing a pair of state ranked teams, as the Beavers fell short in both, with the girls falling 55-35, and the boys took a loss 56-49.

Goodland Girls 55, Scott City 35
Scott City came in shorthanded with three of their top four scorers out after suffering injuries in the second half on Saturday against Lakin. With new faces in the linup, it was a little baptism by fire early on, but thte Lady Beavers held their ground against the No. 8 team in Class 3A. Goodland (4-1, 2-0 GWAC) never trailed, opening up an 8-0 lead, and used a run of 17-1 to lead 25-5 with 3:40 left before half. Scott City rattled off seven straight before a four-point play gave Goodland a 29-12 advantage at the break. The Cowgirls used stifling defense, and grew their lead to 41-16 in the third quarter. Scott City (1-4, 0-1) outscored Godland in the fourth quarter 15-8, as they scored the second most points against the Cowgirls this year.

Goodland got 12 points from Hope Biermann, and 10 apiece from Alli Cure and Emily-Grey Stargill. The Cowgirls were 13-20 from the free throw line, and had 20 turnovers. Scott City got career-high tying 15 points from Peyton Gentry, and career highs by Valerya Castillo and Kaylee Felker with 10 points apiece. The Lady Beavers committed 37 turnovers and went 12-19 from the foul line.

Goodland has won 11 stragiht in the series, and lead the series 44-30 since 1980.

The game remained close for three quarters with 10 lead changes and two ties. Unfortunately for the Beavers, a cold shooting stretch in the second half did them in. Goodland the No. 6 ranked team in Class 3A, started out with the games first seven points, only to see the Scott City counter with eight straight, before the Beavers took a 13-12 first quartert lead. The teams would trade five-poing runs in teh second quarter, before Scott City took a 25-22 lead late in the half, befoer a Cowboy triple knotted up things at 15 at halftime. They would lead by four with 4:41 left in the third quarter at 34-30, when the offense would shut down. Goodland (4-1, 2-0 GWAC) went on an 18-1 run over seven-minute spurt, while Scott (2-3, 0-1) City didn’t hit a field goal for over eight minutes, as the Beavers trailed 41-35 after three quarters. The Cowboys led by as many as 13 points until a late burst by the Beavers pulled them to within 54-49 with 1:00 minute left. Scott City was had a chance to pull to within a single possession game, but a costly turnover would doom them in as Goodland picked up the 56-49 win.

Sophomore Konner Collett poured in a career-high 29 poitns and 12 rebounds, while Jesus Saucedo had 11 points and Braylon Mull added 10. The Cowboys shot 10-18 from the free throw line and had 11 turnovers. Junior Meza led the way for Scott City with 16 points. The Beavers shot 6-9 from the charity line and had 12 turnovers.

The Cowboys now have a four-game win streak, their longest in the series since December, 1993-February 1996. Scott City leads the series 41-35 since 1979.

Scott City will turnaround and host Holcomb on Friday night. The Lady Longhorns are 6-0 following their 41-39 road win at Colby, and the Holcomb boys are also 6-0 with a 67-58 win over the Eagles, as they improve to 6-0. Goodland will be in the Rock Creek Tournament starting thursday, as they will face Eudora in the opening round.
