KDOT Urges Drivers to Drive Sober this Holiday Season

drivetozero

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) urges sober driving this holiday season, one of the deadliest times on Kansas roads.

As part of the national safety campaign “Taking Down DUI,” which runs from Dec. 26 through Jan 2, drivers can expect increased law enforcement presence. Seventeen people died in traffic crashes between Dec. 18, 2024, and Jan. 1, 2025, with drugs or alcohol involved in 32 crashes that resulted in 26 injuries.

“Driving impaired is illegal and deadly,” said KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager Gary Herman. “Don’t risk hurting yourself or others. Drive Sober.”

If your celebration involves alcohol, planning ahead saves lives:

  • Plan a safe ride home. Call a ride-share, cab or a sober friend.
  • If you’re hosting, offer non-alcohol beverages.
  • If someone has been drinking, take their keys and arrange for a sober ride home.
  • If you see an impaired driver, contact law enforcement.
