Beavers split with Firebirds on second day of Roundball Classic

Garden City, Kan.(westernkansasnews.com)–In the second day of the Roundball Classic at Garden City High School, the Scott City Beavers would see a first time opponent for the second straight day, as they would take on the Lawrence Free State Firebirds. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Beavers rallied late to win 56-52, while the Beaver boys fell to the Firebirds 62-42

Scott City didn’t have a lead for the first 31:48 of the ball game. Playing from behind for much of the ball game, they found a way to exit the game with the lead and the win. Lawrence Free State raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first four-plus minutes of the first quarter before a Lady Beaver run pulled them to within 13-9 after the first frame. Free State would go on a 13-5 run to lead 26-14 late in the half, before Scott City pulled to within 29-19 at intermission. The Lady Firebirds started with the first five points of the third period and led 34-19 at the 6:26 mark of the third quarter. Scott City (1-2) found a way to get in some mini 5-0 runs and closed to within 40-37 after the third. After the Lady Beavers scored to open the fourth to trail by one, Lawrence Free State (1-2) started to pull away, and led 52-44 with 3:10 left. Scott City closed the final 2:36 with the games final 12 points. They would tie it with 45 seconds at 52, and secured back to back defensive stops, as Piper Fox scored the game winner with 12.3 second left, and Peyton Gentry put the game away with a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left to make the final 56-52.

Piper Fox led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Peyton Gentry had a career-high 15 points and Crissa Irvin added 11 points. Scott City was 11-17 from the foul line and had 13 turnovers. Lawrence Free State was led by Sarai Preston with 13 points, while freshman Quinlynn Vail and Morgan McClorey added 12 apiece. The Lady Firebirds were 12-21 from the foul line and had 13 turnovers.

It was the first game between the two programs.

Scott City got out to a fast start, leading 5-0 in the first 74 seconds of the game, only to see the Firebirds score the next nine points. The Beavers countered with a 7-2 run over the last part of the opening period to lead 12-11 after the first quarter. Lawrence Free State (2-1) trailed 15-13 with 5:16 left in the half, and would proceed to go on a 12-0 run to lead 25-15 with 39 seconds left before the break. Scott City hit a three to end a five minute drought and pull to within 25-18 at the break. A 12-2 run over the first four minutes of the third quarter propelled the Firebirds to a 37-20 lead, and they would take a 42-26 lead into the final period. In the fourth, they led by as many as 23 points at 58-35 with 3:30 remaining. Scott City (1-2) was unable to get a significant run, and fell 62-42.

Brenden Barrett led the way with 19 points and Bennett Nagel added 13. They went 15-26 from the foul line and had 15 turnovers. Scott City got 10 from Avery Radke and a career-high 10 from Cooper Irvin. The Beavers were 10-17 from the free throw line and had 18 turnovers.

It was the first meeting between the two teams.

Other scores on the girl side on Friday saw Lakin defeat Coronado 64-31, Ottawa hold off Hugoton 77-70 and Tonganoxie defeat Garden City in overtime 54-51. Saturday’s games will feature Free State against Coronado for 7th place at 11 am at GCCC, Scott City vs Lakin at 2 pm in the 5th place game at GCCC, Garden City against Hugoton at 11 am at GCHS, and Tonganoxie will face Frontier League foe Ottawa for the championship at 2 pm.

Friday’s boys scores saw Garden City defeat Tonganoxie 68-59, Coronado knock off Lakin 81-61, and Hugoton defeat Ottawa 61-51. Saturday’s games will feature Tonganoxie facing Lakin at 12:30 pm at GCCC for 7th place, Garden City takes on Coronado at 12:30 pm at GCHS in the 5th place game, Scott City against Ottawa at 3:30 pm in the 3rd place game at GCCC, and Lawrence Free State against Hugoton in the championship game at GCHS at 3:30 pm.
