Dodge City, KS (GCCC Athletics Department) — Garden City Community College delivered a gritty road performance Wednesday night but ultimately fell 92–83 to No. 19 Dodge City Community College at the Dome. The Broncbusters battled through early adversity, made a strong late first-half push, and stayed within striking distance deep into the second half before Dodge City’s efficiency proved to be the difference.
Dodge City struck first, using pace and transition scoring to jump out to a 16–10 lead at the 12:56 mark of the opening half. Fast breaks and quick buckets allowed the Conquistadors to control the tempo early and put pressure on Garden City’s defense.
The Broncbusters responded with toughness and defensive discipline. Garden City slowly chipped away, finding rhythm offensively while locking in on the defensive end. A strong stretch late in the half—highlighted by multiple stops from Desean Lewis—helped GCCC claw back within 39–37 with 1:26 remaining. Dodge City closed the half with timely baskets to carry a 45–40 lead into the break.
The second half stayed physical and competitive. Garden City continued to answer runs and refused to go away, leaning on balanced scoring and perimeter shooting to stay within reach. Lewis led the Broncbusters with 14 points, while Xavier Johnson provided a major spark off the bench with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Zaire Lott added 19 points, knocking down four three-pointers to keep pressure on the Conquistadors.
Dodge City ultimately pulled away at the free-throw line, converting 30-of-37 attempts, as Garden City continued to fight until the final horn. Despite the result, the Broncbusters showed resilience and competitiveness against one of the top teams in the conference.
With the loss, Garden City moves to 10–5 overall and 5–4 in conference play.
