Dodge City basketball teams win three of four against Cheney, Rose Hill

The Dodge City high school basketball teams took on Cheney and Rose Hill over the weekend, with the girls dropping to Cheney and beating Rose Hill and the boys coming out on top in both games.

Lady Demons @ Cheney

The Cardinals led wire-to-wire to get the 43-23 win over Dodge City. One game after being out-rebounded by Garden Plain 47-24, the Lady Demons were able to win the battle on the glass 39-37. Senior forwards Piper Mellinger and Emma Bell led the way on the glass with 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.

Red Demons @ Cheney

A little less than one year after Cheney came into the Fieldhouse and beat Dodge City by 49 points, the Demons went into Cheney’s gym and got the 58-48 win over the Cardinals.

Senior guard Ty Scheck led the way with 25 points, going 8 of 10 from the field. He also went 8 of 9 from the free throw line as he was fouled 11 different times throughout the game.

Dodge City elected to play zone defensively, and it led to a big night for junior forward Rase Smith, who controlled the middle of the zone. Smith finished the night with 10 points, six rebounds and five blocks. The strategic change also led to sophomore forward Jaycion Norris getting his first career start, where he scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds while blocking two shots.

Lady Demons vs Rose Hill

The Lady Demons forced the Rockets into 36 turnovers to help them toward the 38-23 win. Dodge City didn’t have the best shooting game, going 1 of 9 from deep, but the defensive and rebounding dominance helped them get the job done.

Nobody for Dodge City scored more than eight points as they shared the ball well. Emma Bell had seven points and eight rebounds along with five steals. Senior guard Addisyn Taylor led the Lady Demons with six steals as the team had 21 on the game.

The Lady Demons improved to 5-5 with the victory.

Red Demons vs Rose Hill

All seemed calm for Dodge City as they went up 44-22 early in the 3rd quarter, until the Rose Hill Rockets came storming back to take the lead in the fourth quarter. The Demons recovered from their blown lead well however, as they managed a 63-60 win.

Junior guard Cru Lembright led the way with 22 points including five three-pointers, while Scheck scored 20.

Jaycion Norris had another big game as he scored nine points and pulled in 18 rebounds.

Senior guard Nathan Shulte had nine rebounds as well, helping to keep Rose Hill to just 3 total offensive rebounds on the game.

Shulte had been quiet throughout the game, but with under a minute left to play and the Demons down 60-58, the Demons found him in the corner, and without hesitation he put them in front with a three. He finished the game with six points.

After a stop got Dodge City the ball back, Lembright hit two free throws to put the Demons up three. Norris then got a hand on the game-tying three to seal the win.

The Demons improved to 7-3 with the win.

Both Dodge City basketball teams will be on the road taking on Woodward on Tuesday night with the girls’ game tipping off at 6 p.m. on Z98.
