Eight area wrestlers win individual state titles
It was a good weekend overall for southwest Kansas wrestlers, as the area saw eight individuals claimed state titles, including one team who picked up a state championship.
Starting up in Class 6A, Garden City repeated as state champions, and had two individual state champions. Nicole Abrego of Garden City would take home the 100-pound championship, while Marina Loera won the title at 125. Dodge City also was home Elizabeth Ramirez won at 105, and Yareli Garcia was a champion at 155, helping the Lady Red Demons to a fifth place finish.
Class 6A boys saw Pace Plankenhorn take home the 120-pound title and Zach Long was the state champion at 126, helping the Buffaloes to a fourth place finish.
Class 3-2-1A had two girls individual state champions. Wichita County’s Jentri Porter capped off an undefeated season with a championship at 105, and Ingalls had their first ever state champion in Peyton Smith at 235 pounds.
