Garden City High School, Garden City Community College renew radio broadcasting rights through 2030
GARDEN CITY, Kan. (Western Kansas News) – Garden City High School and Garden City Community College have renewed their broadcasting rights deals with Western Kansas Broadcast Center through the 2030 seasons.
“We’re very excited to continue our broadcasting relationship with both Garden City High School and Garden City Community College athletics,” says Kolby Van Camp, the Garden City sports director and play-by-play voice for both athletics programs. “Western Kansas Broadcast Center has had a long-standing tradition of coverage with both institutions, and the future is bright for all parties involved as we continue to work together into the next decade.”
The agreements, which include but are not limited to the renewal of exclusive radio coverage for GCHS and GCCC football, basketball, baseball, and softball, as well as for the weekly coaches shows Buffs Talk and the Sportsbuster Power Hour, were signed earlier this month.
“We are fired up to continue our partnership with Western Kansas Broadcasting for the coverage of our athletics,” notes GCHS athletic director, Matt Bayer. “We are thankful to have a skilled announcer like Kolby and are pleased with the coverage we have received and are looking forward to the coverage we will receive over the coming years.” Mike Pilosof, athletic director for Garden City Community College also commented, “We are excited to continue our longstanding partnership with Western Kansas Broadcasting.”
The broadcasting season begins on Tuesday, September 2, at 7p with the first edition of Buffs Talk. It was moved from Monday to Tuesday for the first week of September to accommodate Labor Day, which falls on September 1st this year. Buffs Talk will continue in perpetuity throughout the season on Monday nights after the first week of September. The Sportsbuster Power Hour will follow on Thursday, September 4 at 7p to launch the athletic season for GCCC. The GCHS Football season kicks off on Friday, September 5 at 6A state runner-up Manhattan High School. Pregame will begin at 6:15p with kickoff at 7p, with both Van Camp and retired Garden City High School coach and administrator John Ford on the call.
“Among some of the new innovations we are looking to develop this year is an expanded pregame show, as well as enhanced coverage during halftime and postgame,” describes Van Camp. “What we are looking to do is be consistently better each and every broadcast.”
The innovation regarding pregame, halftime, and postgame coverage includes the elongating of the pregame show to 45 minutes from its original half-hour, developing a strong line-up of relevant coach, player, and administrator interviews each week for both the high school and the college, and moving these segments to a more studio-based approach.
“I’m proud of some of the young people on our staff that we have been training in the ‘broadcast arts’ here at WKBC. I think the fruits of our labors over the last year will be evident in the sound and quality of our broadcasts this year and into the future,” praises Van Camp. “We have been working hard and will continue to work hard to provide our best coverage yet.”
Garden City Community College kicks off their season on Saturday, September 6, with pregame starting at 6:15p and kickoff at 7p, just like the high school the day before. The #7 ranked Broncbusters will play #4 Navarro College in Corsicana, TX, with both Van Camp and Ford on the call for this game as well.
Developing a consistent sound for the years to come has been an important factor for the sports broadcasting team in Garden City in their preparation for the upcoming season.
“It’s no secret that GCHS and GCCC have had a number of different play-by-play commentators over the last several years, and the continuity of each broadcast has suffered to a degree because of it,” says Van Camp. “Being consistent in our goals and our on-air development is of top priority for me and my sports staff.”
Game coverage and coaches shows will continue to be on 99.9 The Rock through the duration of this sports season and into the future.
