Story by Garden City High School Sports Information

With her young team trailing after one quarter in Tuesday night’s non-conference high school game in Lakin, Garden City High School girls’ coach Kelley Snodgrass knew things had to improve for her Buffs to grab an early 2026 road victory.

Down 14-10 after eight minutes, the Lady Buffs tightened up the defense by holding the Lady Broncs to just 7 points while scoring 16 of their own points to then take a 26-21 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

That was the catapult that eventually kept the Buffs in front the rest of what became a hard-fought 55-50 triumph over the Class 3A Lady Broncs. It was just the second loss for the Lady Broncs in seven games (5-2) while the Lady Buffs snapped a mini, two-game losing streak and improved to 6-3.

The game marked the final outing before the Buffs are scheduled to open play on Friday in the Western Athletic Conference with a home contest with Great Bend. Weather permitting, the girls’ battle will tip-off at 6 p.m. in The Garden. However, weather forecasters are indicating the possibility of anywhere for 2 to 6 inches of snow accompanied by high wind.

That decision by school officials will likely take place Friday morning when things are more current for driving conditions.

“I’m pleased with how the girls responded defensively in the second quarter and got some momentum offensively too take the lead,” Snodgrass said. “It was a well-balanced attack and good to see us making the extra pass and getting some points in transition.”

The Lady Buffs had an 11-10 scoring edge in the third quarter to take a 35-31 lead into the final eight minutes. Slowly, but surely, the Lady Buffs built that lead into double digits at 53-41 with 2:16 remaining on Mia Hannagan’s fifth 3-pointer of the night.

The score was 55-47 when Lakin’s Kate Miller knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final 5-point margin.

“I feel like we handled their pressure well and were in attack mode,” Snodgrass said. “We need to get off to a faster start and putting them at the foul line 20 times (Lakin made 13) is a concern for us to get better defensively without fouling.”

The Lady Buffs, meanwhile, had their own struggles at the charity stripe again, making only 8-of-17.

The Buffs did end up with seven players getting into the scoring column with Hannagan’s 16 points leading the way. Myah Korf, with a pair of 3-pointers herself, and Teagan Snodgrass, each added 12 points to the cause.

Lakin’s Aryn Michaelis, a 6-1 junior forward, finished with a game-high 17 points after being limited to just 3 points in the first half. Lileah Villa added 12 points for the Lady Broncs.
