Lady Beaver softball swept in Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver softball team took to the field on Tuesday afternoon, as they made the trip to Goodland to face the Cowgirls in a GWAC doubleheader. It would be a tough day for the Lady Beavers, as errors would plague them in the doubleheader, as they fell 16-1 in game one and 18-10 in the finale.

Goodland 16, Scott City 1, Game 1 (4 Inn.)
Things started out good early on for the Lady Beavers. They would have three hits in the first inning, and take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Peyton Gentry that scored Crissa Irvin. After that, it was all Goodland. The Cowgirls would bat around in the first inning, and take a 5-1 lead, and scored five runs in the second inning to take a 10-1 lead. They added three runs in the third and fourth innings to make the final 16-1. Most of Goodland’s scoring would come with two outs.

Alli Cure got the win, throwing only 42 pitches in four innings, giving up an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Dani Fisher had three hits and drove in three runs, while Alessa Rickard and Destiny Gonzalez had two hits and three RBI. Baylee Wolkensdorfer took the loss, giving up 16 runs, eight earned, on 15 hits with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Peyton Gentry had a hit and RBI, and Criss Irvin and Piper Fox each had a hit.

Goodland 18, Scott City 10, Game 2
Scott City did a good job putting the first game behind them early on, as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Goodland would score a run in the first and second innings to pull to within 3-2. The Lady Beavers were able to score five runs over the next two innings to lead 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Unfortunately for Scott City, the Cowgirls would take advantage of four errors and tie the game up heading into the fifth. Goodland would take advantage of four more errors in the bottom of the fifth, and took a 15-8 lead. The Lady Beavers plated a run in the sixth and seventh, and the Cowgirls added three more in the sixth to take the 18-10 win and complete the sweep.

Alli Cure gave up 10 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work. Dani Fisher and Kaedence Smith drove in two runs each, while Elly Ever had two hits with an RBI. Ava Deines took the loss, surrendering 15 runs, only three earned, on eight hits, with a strikeout in five innings of work. Kaylee Felker had three hits and drove in three runs, while Crissa Irvin and Deines had three hits apiece.

Scott City is now 4-10 overall, 2-8 in GWAC play, as they will play at Ellis on Friday. Goodland improved to 5-9 overall, and 4-4 in league play, as they will host Russell on Thursday.
